Yankees acquire Greg Allen from San Diego

On Wednesday (January 6), the New York Yankees acquired OF Greg Allen from the San Diego Padres in exchange for LHP James Reeves.

Allen, 27, has batted .239 (133-for-557) with 77R, 22 doubles, 6 triples, 8HR, 57RBI and 32SB in 221 games over parts of four Major League seasons (2017-20 with Cleveland and 2020 with San Diego), appearing in games at all three outfield positions. In 2020, the switch-hitter combined with Cleveland and San Diego to bat .154 (4-for-26) with 4R, 1 double, 1HR and 4RBI in 16 games. He was designated for assignment by the Padres on December 31, 2020.

In his minor league career, Allen hit .276 (510-for-1,850) with 358R, 97 doubles, 15 triples, 23HR and 165RBI in 483 games over parts of six minor league seasons with the Cleveland organization (2014-19).

The San Diego, Calif., native was originally selected by Cleveland in the sixth round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of San Diego State University. 

Allen has been added to the Yankees’ 40-man roster, which now stands at 40.

Reeves, 27, was selected by the Yankees in the 10th round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of The Citadel. In parts of five minor league seasons (2015-19), the Summerville, S.C., native is 20-7 with a 2.30 ERA (293.1IP, 75ER) and 350K in 137 games (12 starts). He did not play during the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
