The New York Yankees today announced that they have re-signed INF Anthony Rizzo to a two-year Major League contract extending through the 2024 season with a club option for the 2025 season.

Rizzo, 33, hit .224/.338/.480 (104-for-465) with 77R, 21 doubles, 1 triple, 32HR, 75RBI, 58BB, 23HP and 6SB in 130 games with the Yankees in 2022. His 32 home runs matched his career high (also 2014,’16 and ‘17) and were tied for the seventh-most in the American League. Over parts of two seasons with the Yankees (2021-22), he has posted a .230 (147-for-638) batting average with 109R, 28 doubles, 1 triple, 40HR, 96RBI, 74BB, 32HP and 8SB in 179 total games.

In 12 Major League seasons with the San Diego Padres (2011), Chicago Cubs (2012-21) and New York Yankees (2021-22), Rizzo has a .265 (1,476-for-5,578) batting average with 839R, 312 doubles, 22 triples, 283HR, 889RBI and 719BB in 1,536 career games. A three-time NL All-Star (2014-16), he has hit at least 20 home runs nine times in his career (2013-19, ’21-22) and is the only player since 2013 to hit at least 20 home runs in nine seasons. Additionally, he is one of nine Major League players to record at least five 30-homer seasons since 2014, joining Nolan Arenado (seven), Nelson Cruz (seven), Edwin Encarnacion (six), Paul Goldschmidt (six), Manny Machado (six), Mike Trout (six), José Abreu (five) and Giancarlo Stanton (five).

Rizzo finished in the top four in NL MVP voting twice (fourth in 2015 and fourth in 2016) and was a member of the 2016 World Series champion Chicago Cubs. The first baseman is a four-time Gold Glove Award winner (2016, ’18-20) and was named the 2016 NL Platinum Glove winner. Since 2011, his .995 fielding percentage at first base is the sixth-best at the position (min. 650 games).

Additionally, Rizzo was honored with the 2017 Roberto Clemente Award, annually given to the player who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.

He was originally acquired by the Yankees along with cash considerations from the Cubs on July 29, 2021, in exchange for minor league RHP Alexander Vizcaíno and OF Kevin Alcántara. Rizzo then re-signed with the Yankees on March 17, 2022, signing a two-year Major League contract extending through the 2023 season with a player opt-out following 2022. He exercised that opt-out on November 9, 2022.

Originally selected by the Boston Red Sox in the sixth round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft out of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., Rizzo was traded along with RHP Casey Kelly, OF Reymond Fuentes and INF Eric Patterson to the San Diego Padres for INF Adrián González on December 5, 2010. The left-handed hitter was then acquired by Chicago-NL along with RHP Zach Cates from San Diego in exchange for RHP Andrew Cashner and OF Kyung-Min Na on January 6, 2012. On May 13, 2013, Rizzo signed a seven-year contract through 2019 with the Cubs which included club options for 2020 and 2021.
