Yordan Alvarez Family to attend first MLB game tonight

August 23rd, 2022

The family of Yordan Alvarez will have the opportunity to see him play in a professional game for the very first time tonight at Minute Maid Park when the Astros host the Minnesota Twins (7:10 pm start). The Alvarez family, who are from Cuba, arrived in Houston on Friday of last week.

Yordan’s mother (Marilyn Cardogan Reyes), father (Auguistin Eduardo Alvarez Salazar) and brother (Yonder Alvarez Cadogan) are scheduled to be in attendance at tonight’s game.

Yordan originally defected from Cuba in 2016 and established residence in Haiti. While there, he signed with the Dodgers organization as an international free agent on June 15, 2016. On August 1 of that year, before playing in a professional game, he was traded to the Astros in exchange for RHP Josh Fields. Alvarez made his MLB debut for the Astros in June of 2019, and went on to earn AL Rookie of the Year honors that season (.327, 27 HR, 1.067 OPS). Yordan earned his first All-Star selection in 2022 and is among the AL leaders in HR (31), RBI (79) and OPS (1.009).
