FLUSHING, N.Y., August 20, 2026 – The New York Mets today announced the club will honor legendary broadcaster Howie Rose with a special retirement ceremony prior to the team’s final regular season home game of the 2026 season on Sunday, September 20 against the Philadelphia Phillies at 1:10 p.m. at Citi Field. Rose, whose unmistakable voice has been part of Mets baseball for nearly four decades, announced that the 2026 season would be his final year in the Mets radio booth. The first 15,000 fans will receive a “Put it in the books” notebook and scorecard.
“For generations of Mets fans, Howie Rose has been more than a broadcaster, he has been the soundtrack of summer and the voice behind some of the most memorable moments in our history,” said Mets Owners Steve and Alex Cohen. “His love for baseball and this organization has come through in every call, creating a connection with Mets fans that few broadcasters ever achieve. Howie's impact extends far beyond the booth. He is part of the fabric of this franchise, and we are proud to celebrate an extraordinary career while thanking him for everything he has meant to the Mets. We wish Howie and his family nothing but the best in this next chapter.”
The pregame ceremony will recognize Rose’s remarkable broadcasting career and his lasting impact on the organization, New York sports, and the fans who have listened to him bring the game to life for decades.
A lifelong Mets fan from Queens, Rose began his Mets broadcasting career in 1987 and has been the lead play-by-play voice on the radio for the franchise since 2006. He has served in a variety of roles across radio and television for multiple teams throughout his 52 years in broadcasting.
Rose’s signature sign off, “Put it in the books!”, has become an iconic part of Mets victories. His career with the organization has included historic calls such as Johan Santana’s no-hitter, Mike Piazza’s September 11 home run, and numerous memories that will forever resonate with fans.
“Having grown up a Mets fan, calling games for this organization has been the honor of a lifetime,” said Rose. “I am deeply grateful to the Mets and Ownership, my broadcast partners, the players, coaches and staff, and most of all, the fans who have made this journey so meaningful. Sharing one more day at Citi Field with them is something I will cherish forever.”
Rose is widely regarded as one of the most respected broadcasters in New York sports history with a celebrated list of awards and accolades. He was inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame in June of 2023, the New York State Hockey Hall of Fame for its inaugural class in May of 2022, and the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame in November of 2019. Following the 2022 season, Rose was named the New York Chapter BBWAA’s Arthur and Milton Richman ‘You Gotta Have Heart’ award.
Fans are encouraged to be in their seats early to take part in the celebration. Tickets for the September 20 game are available at Mets.com/Tickets or by calling 718-507-TIXX. Additional details surrounding the ceremony, including timing and special guests, will be announced at a later date.
