Rangers activate 1B Ronald Guzman, place RHP Shawn Kelley on 10-day injured list, recall RHP Wei-Chieh Huang from Nashville

May 9th, 2019

Houston, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced the following roster moves ahead of Thursday’s series opener against the Astros in Houston:

  • First baseman Ronald Guzmán activated from 10-day injured list
  • Right-handed pitcher Shawn Kelley placed on 10-day injured list, retroactive to Monday, with a bacterial infection
  • Right-handed pitcher Wei-Chieh Huang recalled from Triple-A Nashville

Guzmán last played for the Rangers on April 6 in Anaheim, when he sustained a right hamstring strain while running the bases on a third-inning double. He was placed on the 10-day injured list the next day. He played 4 games on injury rehabilitation assignment from Saturday through Wednesday with Double-A Frisco, going a combined 4-for-18 with a home run, double, 2 RBI, and 2 runs. He has a .231 batting average with 2 home runs and 4 RBI in 9 games with Texas this season, starting 8 games at first base.

Kelley has gone 3-0 with a 1.29 ERA (2 ER/14.0 IP) and 2 saves over his first 14 relief appearances with the club. The first date he would be eligible to return is May 16. The right-hander has converted 2 of 3 save opportunities, including his last outing on Saturday vs. Toronto. He ranks among the club’s relief leaders in wins (1st), saves (2nd), innings (T2nd), and appearances (3rd). Kelley signed with Texas as a free agent in January and was a member of the club’s Opening Day bullpen.

Huang will be in his third stint with the Rangers this season, as he was also with the club April 23 and April 26-May 4. He was optioned to Nashville (AAA) on Sunday when Drew Smyly was activated from the injured list. Huang has no record and a 2.70 ERA (1 ER/3.1 IP) in his first two Major League relief appearances. He started for Nashville on Tuesday and retired all 6 batters faced with 3 strikeouts vs. Oklahoma City in his first career outing at the Triple-A level. He has combined to go 1-0 with a 1.54 ERA (2 ER/11.2 IP) and 17 strikeouts/2 walks over 7 games/2 starts with Frisco (AA) and Nashville this season.

Outfielder Delino DeShields was optioned to Nashville following Wednesday’s game in Pittsburgh, which leaves the active roster at 25 players for tonight’s series opener in Houston.

Following today’s transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the major league roster, along with four players on the 60-day injured list: RHP Luke Farrell, OF Scott Heineman, LHP Yohander Méndez, and RHP Edinson Vólquez.
