The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has activated right-handed pitcher Chris Martin from the 10-day disabled list. To make room for Martin on the active roster, the team has optioned right-handed pitcher Ariel Jurado (pronounced air-REE-el hurr-RAH-doe) to Double-A Frisco.
Martin has a 0-1 record with a 5.14 ERA (8 ER/14.0 IP) over 16 relief appearances for Texas this season. A member of the Opening Day roster, his last game with the Rangers was on April 30 at Cleveland, and he was placed on the 10-day disabled list on May 2 (retroactive to May 1) with right forearm irritation. Martin pitched in 2 games for Double-A Frisco on an injury rehabilitation assignment, appearing both Monday and Wednesday at Midland: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO. He pitched a scoreless inning in his last rehab outing on Wednesday: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 SO, 16 pitches/12 strikes.
An Arlington native, Martin signed a two-year free agent contract with the Rangers in December after pitching the previous two seasons for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB).
Jurado was recalled from Frisco on Saturday and took the loss in his major league debut against the White Sox last night in Chicago: 4.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R-ER, 2 BB, 2 SO. He has spent the season with Frisco, compiling a 1-1 record with a 2.57 ERA (10 ER/35.0 IP) in 6 games/starts.
With these moves, the Rangers still have 40 players on the club's major league roster, along with 6 players on the 60-day disabled list.
