The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has placed right-handed pitcher Keone Kela on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to August 5, with right shoulder soreness. The team has also purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Ricky Rodriguez (#68) from Double-A Frisco.
 
Kela has gone 4-1 with a 2.36 ERA (9 ER/34.1 IP) in 34 relief appearances for the Rangers this season, and his .128 opponents batting average is the lowest among qualifying major league relievers. Kela was also on the disabled list from June 30-July 19 with right shoulder soreness. The first date he would be eligible to return is August 15.
 
Rodriguez, 24, has combined for a 5-1 record with 17 saves and a 1.34 ERA (7 ER/47.0 IP) over 35 relief appearances with High-A Down East and Double-A Frisco. The right-hander has averaged 11.7 strikeouts per 9 innings and 1.9 walks per 9 innings in 2017, holding opponents to a .149 average (24-161). The Venezuela native has gone 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA (2 ER/19.0 IP) and 5 saves since a late June promotion to Frisco, and has not allowed a run over his last 11.1 innings with the RoughRiders. He last worked on Sunday vs. Corpus Christi, posting a scoreless 9th inning for his 5th Texas League save.
 
After logging just 7 appearances in 2015-16 due to Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, Rodriguez opened the 2017 campaign with Down East and was 2nd in the Carolina League with 12 saves at the time of his promotion on June 28. With the Wood Ducks, Rodriguez retired 45 consecutive batters faced from May 14-June 28. Prior to 2017, Rodriguez had appeared in just 2 games above the Low-A level, pitching in a pair of games with Triple-A Round Rock in 2015. He was signed by the Rangers as a non-drafted free agent on December 13, 2010.
 
With these transactions, the Rangers have 38 players on the club's major league roster, along with four players on the 60-day disabled list.
