The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has signed left-handed pitcher Adam Loewen (#77) to a 2017 Minor League contract with an invitation to Major League Spring Training camp.
Loewen, who turns 33 on April 9, spent 2016 in the Arizona organization, going 5-3 with a 3.91 ERA in 40 games/one start at Triple-A Reno. He was with the D-backs from July 30-August 14 with a 1-0 record and 15.00 ERA (10 ER/6.0 IP). Loewen issued runs in just two of eight appearances with Arizona but issued all 10 runs in just 1.0 total inning in those two outings.
Loewen is 10-8 with a 5.85 ERA in 63 games/29 starts with Baltimore (2006-08), Philadelphia (2015), and Arizona (2016). He has been primarily a pitcher in his pro career, but also saw extensive time as an outfielder from 2009-14, a span which included 14 games in the Majors with Toronto in 2011.
Loewen is a member of Team Canada's pitching staff for the upcoming World Baseball Classic. He was also on Canada's WBC roster as a pitcher in 2006 and as an outfielder in 2013. 
With the signing, Texas will have 20 non-roster invitees in Spring Training. The Rangers' first workout for pitchers and catchers in Surprise, Arizona is Wednesday, February 15 with the first full workout on Tuesday, February 21. 
LAFROMBOISE SIGNED TO MINOR LEAGUE DEAL: Texas has also signed RHP Bobby LaFromboise to a Minor League contract. LaFromboise, 30, was 1-3 with a 5.94 ERA in 13 games for Triple-A Lehigh Valley in the Philadelphia organization. He has a Major League career record of 0-1 with a 3.63 ERA in 27 games with Seattle (2013) and Pittsburgh (2014-15). He will report to early Minor League camp later this week.
