The Rangers announced today that the club has signed RHP Deolis Guerra to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training camp.
Guerra, 28 has spent the last two seasons in the Los Angeles Angels organization. He split 2017 between the Angels (2-2, 4.68 in 19 G) and Triple-A Salt Lake (4-3, 2.36, 2 SV in 39 G). He has a career record of 7-2, 4.17 in 73 games with Pittsburgh (2015) and the Angels (2016-17). Guerra became a free agent at the end of the 2017 season after declining an outright assignment by Los Angeles.
In addition, five players from the Rangers' minor league system have been invited to major league spring camp: right-handed pitchers Reed Garrett and Adrian Sampson, left-handed pitcher Jeffrey Springs, infielder Andy Ibanez, and outfielder Scott Heineman.
The 25-year-old Garrett went 2-5 with a 4.98 ERA (38 ER/68.2 IP) and 10 saves over 44 games/4 starts with Double-A Frisco. Garrett posted the 4th-most saves among Texas farmhands after shifting to the bullpen in April and compiled a 0.79 ERA (2 ER/22.2 IP) with 26 strikeouts over his final 20 relief outings of the season.
Sampson, 26, was 2-2 with a 3.45 ERA (12 ER/31.1 IP) over 8 starts with the rookie-level Arizona Rangers, High-A Down East, and Triple-A Round Rock in his first season in the Texas organization. The right-hander returned to the mound in July after undergoing surgery to repair a flexor tendon in his right elbow on June 30, 2016. Sampson was received on a waiver claim from Seattle on November 2, 2016 after he made his major league debut with the Mariners earlier that season.
The 25-year-old Springs was 2-8 with a 3.69 ERA (46 ER/112.1 IP) and 2 saves over 31 games/17 starts at Down East. The southpaw led all Texas farmhands and finished 2nd in the Carolina League with 146 strikeouts, and averaged 11.7 strikeouts per 9.0 innings, 6th-highest among all full season pitchers (min. 100.0 IP).
The 25-year-old Heineman batted .284 (133-468) with 9 home runs and 44 RBI over 117 games with Double-A Frisco. Heineman, an 11th round selection in the 2015 June draft, ranked among the Frisco club leaders in runs scored (1st, 82), triples (1st, 7), hits (2nd), doubles (2nd, 26), HR (T4th), and RBI (5th). Ibanez, 24, has spent the bulk of his two seasons stateside at Frisco and batted .265 (82-310) with 8 home runs and 29 RBI in 82 games with the 'Riders last season. The Cuban has seen action at both second and third since signing with Texas as a free agent on July 7, 2015.
