Abad, 30, went 1-4 with a 2.65 ERA (10 ER/34.0 IP) and .220 opponent batting average in 39 relief appearances with the Twins this season. He has allowed only two home runs (0.53 HR/9.0 IP) and eight extra-base hits, holding opposing hitters to a .317 slugging percentage. Abad has held left-handed batters to a .458 OPS, the fifth-lowest mark among American League relievers who have faced at least 50 lefties. Originally signed by Houston as a non-drafted free agent in 2002, he is 6-24 with one save and a 3.58 ERA (104 ER/261.1 IP) in 297 Major League appearances (six starts) between the Astros (2010-12), Washington Nationals (2013), Oakland A's (2014-15), and Twins (2016). Since the start of 2013, the Dominican Republic native has posted a 2.85 ERA (56 ER/176.2 IP) and .227 opponent batting average in 209 appearances, all in relief.
Benintendi, 22, has combined to hit .312 (116-for-372) with 70 runs, 31 doubles, nine home runs, 16 stolen bases, and 39 walks against only 39 strikeouts this season between High-A Salem (34 games) and Double-A Portland (63 games), leading all Red Sox Minor Leaguers with 76 RBI and sharing the overall Minor League lead with 12 triples. In his last 43 games with Portland since June 10, including a two-homer, five-RBI effort Sunday at Binghamton, the outfielder has hit .340 (54-for-159) with eight home runs. The seventh overall pick of the 2015 June Draft has played 151 games over two professional seasons, batting .312 (178-for-570) with a .910 OPS, 74 walks, and 63 strikeouts. Over 136 games in the outfield, Benintendi has recorded a .995 fielding percentage (two errors in 373 total chances) with 14 assists. He played for Team USA in this season's SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game in San Diego and was named the No. 9 prospect on Baseball America's Midseason Top 100 list.
Layne, 31, is 0-1 with a 3.77 ERA (12 ER/28.2 IP) in 34 appearances for the Red Sox this season. Signed by Boston as a Minor League free agent on November 14, 2013, the left-hander has pitched in 128 Major League games over three seasons with the Red Sox (2014-16), going 4-3 with one save, a 3.30 ERA (35 ER/95.1 IP), 84 strikeouts, and a .238 opponent batting average. Layne also appeared in 40 games over two seasons with the San Diego Padres (2012-13), where he was 2-2 with a pair of saves and a 2.84 ERA (8 ER/25.1 IP). The Missouri native has also pitched in 282 Minor League games (94 starts) since being selected by Arizona in the 26th round of the 2007 June Draft, going 45-47 with 15 saves and a 4.30 ERA (363 ER/759.2 IP) between the Diamondbacks (2007-12), Padres (2012-13), and Red Sox (2014-16) organizations.
Martinez, 33, appeared in four games (one start) with Boston after being acquired from Cleveland on July 8, going 1-for-6 with a walk and a run scored. Originally signed by the Washington Nationals as a non-drafted free agent in 2005, the switch-hitter has batted .198 (99-for-499) in 240 Major League games (116 starts) while appearing at six defensive positions for the Philadelphia Phillies (2011-13), Pittsburgh Pirates (2014), Indians (2015-16), and Red Sox (2016). Martinez has recorded five assists and four double plays in 83 games (38 starts) as an outfielder and has also played second base (48 games, 29 starts), third base (41 games, 33 starts), and shortstop (25 games, 16 starts). A native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Martinez has also appeared in 875 Minor League games over 11 seasons (2006-16), batting .268 (834-for-3,108) with 111 stolen bases, 149 doubles, 43 triples, and 33 home runs.
