Red Sox announce roster moves -- 4/19/19

April 19th, 2019

Prior to tonight’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Boston Red Sox made the following roster moves:

  • Infielder Eduardo Núñez was placed on the 10-day injured list with a mid-back strain, retroactive to April 18.
  • Right-handed pitcher Erasmo Ramírez was designated for assignment.
  • Infielders Tzu-Wei Lin and Michael Chavis were recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket. Chavis will wear number 23.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Núñez, 31, has appeared in 17 of Boston’s 19 games this season, going 7-for-44 (.159) with five RBI while making 10 starts at second base and one at third base. Acquired by the Red Sox on July 25, 2017, the infielder signed a one-year contract with Boston in February 2018, with a player option for 2019. In 182 games with Boston, he has batted .271 (187-for-689) with 18 home runs and 16 stolen bases. He has appeared in 813 major league games with the New York Yankees (2010-13), Minnesota Twins (2014-16), San Francisco Giants (2016-17), and Red Sox (2017-19).

Ramírez, 28, was selected to the major league roster from Pawtucket on April 16 and made his Red Sox debut that night, allowing four runs in 3.0 innings at Yankee Stadium. An eight-year major league veteran, the Nicaraguan-born Ramírez went 2-4 with a 6.50 ERA (33 ER/45.2 IP) in 10 starts with the Seattle Mariners last season. Over 193 career major league appearances (92 starts) between Seattle (2012-’14, ’17-18), Tampa Bay (2016-17), and Boston (2019), the right-hander is 32-39 with a 4.40 ERA (313 ER/640.2 IP) and 497 strikeouts against just 182 walks.

Lin, 25, began the season with Pawtucket before being recalled by Boston on April 6. He made his lone appearance for the Red Sox that night, pinch-hitting in the club’s 5-4 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. In seven games with the PawSox this season, he has gone 8-for-28 (.286) with three doubles and three walks, making five starts at shortstop, one at second base, and one in left field. One of only four position players in major league history born in Taiwan, the left-handed hitter has appeared in 63 games for Boston over the last three seasons (2017-19).

Chavis, 23, is making his first appearance on an active major league roster. Selected by Boston in the first round of the 2014 June Draft, the right-handed hitter has posted a .954 OPS in 12 games with Pawtucket this season, going 10-for-40 (.250) with four home runs, two doubles, and seven walks. He has homered in three of his last five games, going 7-for-17 (.412) with five extra-base hits in that time. Ranked by Baseball America as the Red Sox’ No. 2 prospect, Chavis has made 249 career starts at third base, 14 at shortstop, 12 at first base, and five at second base.
