Red Sox Announce Roster Moves

June 8th, 2019

BOSTON, MA – Prior to today’s doubleheader against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Boston Red Sox made the following roster moves:

  • First baseman Mitch Moreland was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right quad strain.
  • To fill Moreland’s spot on the 25-man roster, infielder Marco Hernández was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket.
  • Right-handed pitcher Josh Smith was recalled from Pawtucket as the club’s 26th man for today’s day-night doubleheader. Under Major League Baseball Rules, both teams are permitted to add an extra player for today’s games.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Moreland, 33, returned from the injured list yesterday and started last night’s game at first base, but he was removed after six innings due to right quad tightness. He had missed Boston’s previous 10 games while on the disabled list with a low back strain, but he still leads the Red Sox on the season with 13 home runs and a .543 slugging percentage. Originally selected by Texas in the 2007 June Draft, he has hit .250 (891-for-3,559) with 160 home runs and 535 RBI over 10 major league seasons between Texas (2010-16) and Boston (2017-19).

Hernández, 26, has appeared in 42 minor league games this season, including each of his last 21 with Pawtucket. For the PawSox, the left-handed hitter has batted .303 (23-for-76) with nine doubles and two home runs, making 12 starts at second base and five at shortstop. After missing a majority of the 2017 season and all of 2018 recovering from left shoulder surgery, he began the 2019 season on the 10-day disabled list. Hernández made his major league debut with Boston and appeared in 61 games with the Red Sox from 2016-17, batting .284 (31-for-109) while making 15 starts at third base, seven at second base, and six at shortstop.

Smith, 31, appeared in four games for Boston after being selected to the 25-man roster on April 16, going 0-1 with a 4.94 ERA (4 ER/7.1 IP) and three scoreless outings. The right-hander has made six starts for Pawtucket this season, going 2-2 with a 5.23 ERA (18 ER/31.0 IP). He most recently pitched Monday against Lehigh Valley and struck out 11 batters with only one walk, allowing one run in 5.0 innings. In 71 career big league appearances (10 starts) for Cincinnati (2015-16), Oakland (2017), and Boston (2019), Smith is 5-9 with a 5.28 ERA (79 ER/134.2 IP).
