NEW YORK, NY – Prior to tonight’s game against the New York Yankees, the Boston Red Sox placed first baseman/outfielder Steve Pearce on the 10-day injured list with a low back strain. To fill Pearce’s spot on the active 25-man roster, the club recalled first baseman/outfielder Sam Travis from Triple-A Pawtucket.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Pearce, 36, was removed from last night’s game in the second inning due to back spasms. He has hit .180 (16-for-89) in 29 games for Boston this season, including .346 (9-for-26) with a .938 OPS in nine games since May 19. Originally selected by Pittsburgh in the eighth round of the 2005 June Draft, Pearce reached 10 years of major league service time on May 22. He has appeared in 766 major league games with the Pirates (2007-11), Orioles (2012, ’13-15, ’16), Yankees (2012), Astros (2012), Rays (2016), Blue Jays (2017-18), and Red Sox (2018-19).

Travis, 25, made his first career Opening Day roster in 2019 and appeared in two games for the Red Sox before being optioned to Pawtucket on April 3. He has reached base via hit or walk in each of his last 25 games with the PawSox, batting .286 (26-for-91) with a .369 on-base percentage and two home runs during that time. Selected by Boston in the second round of the 2014 June Draft, Travis has hit .252 (30-for-119) with one home run in 54 major league games over the last three seasons (2017-19), going 19-for-62 (.306) with a .789 OPS against left-handed pitchers.
