Red Sox roster moves for April 16

April 16th, 2019

Prior to tonight’s game against the New York Yankees, the Boston Red Sox announced the following roster moves:

  • Catcher Sandy León and right-handed pitcher Erasmo Ramírez (No. 31) were selected to the active roster from Triple-A Pawtucket.
  • Catcher/Utility Blake Swihart was designated for assignment.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

León, 30, began the 2019 season with Pawtucket. Over seven games for the PawSox this year, the Venezuelan native has thrown out six of nine potential base stealers and has hit .125 (3-for-25) with one walk and two runs scored. In 2018, León appeared in a career-high 89 games for Boston and led the majors with a 3.29 catcher’s ERA. He also caught nine team shutouts while the Red Sox posted a 55-23 record (.705) in his starts behind the plate. Over 327 career games between the Washington Nationals (2012-14) and Red Sox (2015-18), the switch-hitting catcher has batted .226 (225-for-997) with 48 doubles, 20 home runs, and 104 RBI. He entered 2019 with a 3.51 catcher’s ERA since the start of the 2015 season, the lowest mark in the American League among players with 100 starts at catcher.

Ramírez, 28, has gone 1-0 with a 1.12 ERA (1 E R/8.0 IP), five strikeouts, and zero walks over his first two starts with the PawSox this season. In his most recent outing, on April 11th against Syracuse, Ramírez, a non-roster invitee to Red Sox Spring Training this year, earned the win with 6.0 scoreless innings. A seven-year major league veteran, the Nicaraguan-born Ramírez went 2-4 with a 6.50 ERA (33 ER/45.2 IP) in 10 starts with the Mariners last season. Over 192 career major league appearances (92 starts) between Seattle (2012-’14, ’17-18) and Tampa Bay (2016-17), the right-hander is 32-39 with a 4.36 ERA (309 ER/637.2 IP) and 496 strikeouts against just 181 walks.

Swihart, 27, has hit .231 (6-for-26) with one double, one home run, and four RBI over 12 games for the Red Sox this season. Defensively, he made all six of his starts at catcher, while also appearing at first base and left field. For his big league career, Swihart, a Texas native, has hit .256 (146-for-571) with 28 doubles, four triples, nine home runs, and 58 RBI over 202 games, all for the Red Sox (2015-19). He played six different defensive positions over 82 major league games last season, batting .229 (44-for-192) with three home runs and 18 RBI. He was a first-round selection by Boston in the 2011 June Draft.
