BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today selected right-handed pitcher José De León to the active Major League roster from Triple-A Worcester. He will wear number 78. To make room, Boston optioned left-handed pitcher Chris Murphy.
The Red Sox’ 40-man roster is now at 40.
De León, 33, will start today’s game against the Detroit Tigers. The right-hander has pitched in 22 games (13 starts) for Worcester this season, recording a 6.93 ERA (58 ER/75.1 IP) with 89 strikeouts. Originally selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 24th round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, the Puerto Rico native has recorded a 7.44 ERA (54 ER/65.1 IP) in 34 career Major League games (seven starts) with the Los Angeles Dodgers (2016), Tampa Bay Rays (2017-19), Cincinnati Reds (2020-21), and Minnesota Twins (2023).
Murphy, 27, tossed 3.0 scoreless innings of relief in yesterday’s game against the Detroit Tigers. The left-hander has pitched in 23 games for Boston this season, going 3-0 with a 3.12 ERA (12 ER/34.2 IP) and .172 opponent batting average (21-for-122). He has also posted a 3.38 ERA (8 ER/21.1 IP) in 13 games (two starts) for Worcester. Selected by Boston in the sixth round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft, the California native owns a 4.15 ERA (38 ER/82.1 IP) with 79 strikeouts in 43 career Major League games, all with the Red Sox (2023, 2025).
