Boston acquires Minor League OF Marcus Wilson from Diamondbacks

BOSTON – The Boston Red Sox today traded catcher/utility player Blake Swihart to the Arizona Diamondbacks along with international amateur signing bonus pool space in exchange for minor league outfielder Marcus Wilson.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Wilson, 22, entered 2019 ranked by Baseball America as the No. 20 prospect in the Diamondbacks system. Selected by Arizona in the second round of the 2014 June Draft, the right-handed Wilson has played parts of six minor league seasons in the organization, batting .255 (367-for-1,442) with 76 doubles, 14 triples, 24 home runs, 173 RBI, and 70 stolen bases in 391 games, including 311 starts in center field. In 12 games with Double-A Jackson this season, the California native hit .235 (8-for-34) with an .879 OPS, two doubles, one triple, two home runs, seven RBI, and three stolen bases. He earned mid-season and postseason All-Star honors in the Single-A Midwest League with Kane County in 2017.

Swihart, 27, hit .231 (6-for-26) with one double, one home run, and four RBI over 12 games for the Red Sox this season. Defensively, he made all six of his starts at catcher, while also appearing at first base and left field. For his big league career, Swihart, a Texas native, has hit .256 (146-for-571) with 28 doubles, four triples, nine home runs, and 58 RBI over 202 games, all for the Red Sox (2015-19). He played six different defensive positions over 82 major league games last season, batting .229 (44-for-192) with three home runs and 18 RBI. He was a first-round selection by Boston in the 2011 June Draft.
