Rangers announce 2025 Major League coaching staff

November 26th, 2024

Arlington, Texas -- The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has finalized its 2025 Major League coaching staff under third-year manager Bruce Bochy.

New additions include bench coach Luis Urueta (pronounced ooh-roo-ET-ah), assistant pitching coach Dave Bush, and bullpen coach Jordan Tiegs (pronounced TEEGS). The trio joins seven staff returnees as well as assistant hitting coach Justin Viele (pronounced VEE-lee), who was formally added to the staff on November 4.

Urueta, 43, served as Marlins Bench Coach in 2023-24 under former Miami Manager Skip Schumaker, who was hired by Texas on November 13 as Senior Advisor, Baseball Operations. Urueta had previous coaching stints in the Arizona organization in 2022 (MLB Player Development & Instruction), 2020-21 (Bench Coach), and 2018-19 (Major League Coach). Prior to those stints, he filled various roles within Arizona’s minor league system from 2007-17: Dominican Summer League Manager (2007, 2013-14), Short Season Field Coordinator (2008-12, 2016), Triple-A Coach (2015), and Field Coordinator (2017). Urueta also managed Team Colombia during the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

A native of Barranquilla, Colombia, Urueta signed as an international free agent with the D-backs in 1998, becoming the organization’s first Colombian player. His professional playing career spanned five years in the Arizona (1999-2002) and St. Louis (2003) farm systems, appearing at first base and all three outfield positions. Following his career in affiliated baseball stateside, Urueta played four seasons in the Italian Baseball League for Bologna (2004-06) and Florence (2007).

Bush, 45, was hired by the Rangers in January and spent the past season as Director, Pitching Strategy, a role that included both on-field and front office duties. He was in the dugout as interim pitching coach for a limited number of games when Pitching Coach Mike Maddux was away from the club in 2024. Bush served as pitching coach for the Boston Red Sox from 2020-23, this after previous stints for that club as a pitching development analyst (2016-18) and minor league pitching coordinator (2019). The right-hander had 211 games/187 starts over nine Major League seasons with Toronto (2004-05, 2013), Milwaukee (2006-10), and Texas (2011). As a player, Bush worked with Maddux in both Milwaukee (2006-08) and Texas (2011).

The 37-year-old Tiegs will be in his first season on a Major League staff in 2025, although he has spent time with the big league club at various points in previous years. He will be in his sixth full season with the Rangers, having served from 2022-24 as the organization’s pitching coordinator. Since joining the club’s player development department in mid-2019, he served as pitching coach for the Arizona League Rangers (2019) and High-A Hickory (2021), while also working with the Fall Developmental League in 2020. Tiegs has also spent time as pitching coach at the University of Indianapolis (2012-14) and Indiana State (2015-19). He pitched professionally in the independent Frontier League in 2009-10 after graduating from the University of Indianapolis.

Viele, 34, has spent the last five seasons (2020-24) as a hitting coach for the San Francisco Giants. While working with current Rangers coach Donnie Ecker in 2021, Viele helped lead the Giants offense to a franchise-record 241 home runs, the second-highest total in MLB that season (262-Toronto). Prior to joining the Giants, Viele spent three years as a hitting coach in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization in 2019 (Low-A Great Lakes), 2018 (High-A Rancho Cucamonga), and 2017 (Rookie-level Ogden).

There are seven returnees to the Texas coaching staff for 2025: pitching coach Mike Maddux, offensive coordinator Donnie Ecker, first base coach Corey Ragsdale, third base coach Tony Beasley, catching coach Bobby Wilson, assistant hitting coach Seth Conner, and quality control coach Brett Hayes.

Beasley will be in his 11th season with Texas, the longest-tenured member of the Rangers coaching staff. Ragsdale will be in his sixth season on the staff, while Wilson is on the staff for a fifth year. Ecker, Hayes, and Conner will all be in their fourth season with Texas. Hayes will take on a new role after serving as bullpen coach from 2022-24.

Maddux is back for a third season with Texas, a 10th season overall with the Rangers after his previous stint from 2009-15. Maddux has spent the last 22 seasons as a Major League pitching coach with four teams: Milwaukee (2003-08), Texas (2009-15; 2023-24), Washington (2016-17), and St. Louis (2018-22).

The only members of the Rangers’ 2024 coaching staff who did not return both took positions with other MLB clubs. Former Rangers Hitting Coach Tim Hyers was hired by the Atlanta Braves on October 28. Former Rangers Associate Manager Will Venable was hired to be Manager of the Chicago White Sox on October 31.
