KANSAS CITY, MO (August 6, 2021) – The Kansas City Royals have announced in partnership with the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum and Kansas City’s own Negro League Baseball Museum that Satchel Paige’s Hall of Fame plaque will be brought from Cooperstown to Kansas City for public display on Monday, August 9 at Kauffman Stadium, and Tuesday, August 10 at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.

The special events will mark the 50th Anniversary of Satchel Paige’s induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame which took place on August 9, 1971 in Cooperstown (NY). The commemoration will begin with a pre-game ceremony including members of the Paige family at Kauffman Stadium on Monday, August 9 before the Royals take on the New York Yankees. The Paige plaque will then be moved to the Royals Hall of Fame inside Kauffman Stadium where all fans will be able to view it during the game.

On Tuesday, August 10 the plaque will be on display at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum located at 1616 E 18th Street, in Kansas City, MO.

Paige is considered one of the greatest pitchers in all of baseball history. He was born July 7, 1906, in Mobile, Alabama, and began his professional baseball career in the 1920s. As noted by the National Baseball Hall of Fame, “The lanky 6-foot-3 right-hander quickly became the biggest drawing card in Negro baseball, able to overpower batters with a buggy-whipped fastball.” He played for many teams but is often connected to Kansas City both for his time playing for the Monarchs – and the fact he came to call Kansas City home.

Paige was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971 as the first electee selected from the Committee on Negro Baseball Leagues. He passed away on June 8, 1982.
