Rockies recall Jeff Hoffman from Triple-A

DENVER – The Colorado Rockies announced today that they have recalled right-handed pitcher Jeff Hoffman from Triple-A Albuquerque and have optioned infielder Pat Valaika to Triple-A.

Hoffman, 26, will start today against the Washington Nationals, his first Major League appearance of the season … has gone 0-2 with a 13.89 ERA (11.2 IP, 18 ER) in three appearances, two starts, with Albuquerque … made five relief appearances and one start across two stints with the Rockies in 2018, posting a 9.35 ERA (8.2 IP, 9 ER) with seven walks and five strikeouts … since making his Major League debut in 2016, has gone 6-9 with a 5.88 ERA (139.1 IP, 91 ER), 64 walks and 109 strikeouts across 37 career appearances, 23 starts … originally selected in the first round (ninth overall) of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft by Toronto, he was acquired by the Rockies July 27, 2015 along with RHP Miguel Castro, INF Jose Reyes and RHP Jesus Tinoco in exchange for RHP LaTroy Hawkins and SS Troy Tulowitzki. Valaika, 26, has batted .074 (2-for-27) with three runs scored, one double, four walks and 13 strikeouts in 15 games with the Rockies since his recall on April 1 … made his first Opening Day roster in 2018 and batted .156 (19-for-122) with five doubles, two home runs, five RBI, nine walks and 30 strikeouts in 68 games across four stints with the Rockies … in 2017, led all MLB pinch-hitters in RBI (16), runs (12), doubles (eight) and extra-base hits (12), while tying for the MLB lead with four pinch-hit home runs … his 16 pinch-hit RBI were the most by a rookie since 1958 and his 12 extra-base hits as a pinch-hitter were tied for the most in Rockies history … since making his Major League debut with the Rockies in 2016, has batted .209 (73-for-350) with 42 runs, 18 doubles, 16 home runs, 47 RBI and 20 walks across 206 career games.
