Arlington, Texas - The Texas Rangers announced this evening that the club has acquired left-handed pitcher Matt Moore and international signing bonus pool money from the San Francisco Giants for minor league right-handed pitchers Israel Cruz and Sam Wolff.
Moore, 28, returns to the American League where he went 39-28 with 3.88 ERA from 2011-16 with the Tampa Bay Rays. He was traded to San Francisco in a four-player deal on August 1, 2016.
In 2017, Moore was 6-15 with a 5.52 ERA in 32 games/31 starts for the Giants, ranking second on the staff in starts, innings (174.1), quality starts (14), and strikeouts (148). His run support average of 3.67 runs/9.0 innings was the third lowest among major league qualifiers. Moore worked at least 6.0 innings 17 times this past season, going 6-5, 3.04 in those contests.
Moore has a career major league record of 51-48 with a 4.27 ERA in 140 games/137 starts with the Rays and Giants while holding opponents to a .252 batting average and fanning 8.12 batters per 9.0 innings. The left-hander has earned 10+ victories in three different seasons, going 17-4 and earning A.L. All-Star Team honors in 2013.
Moore made his major league debut for Tampa Bay in September 2011 and started Game 1 of the ALDS at Texas with just one career big league start. He issued just two hits in 7.0 shutout innings to defeat the Rangers, 9-0, becoming the first rookie in ML history to pitched at least 7.0 innings and allow no runs and two or fewer hits in a postseason game.
He was selected as Tampa Bay's outstanding rookie in his first full season in 2012, going 11-11 in 31 starts. Moore made just two starts to open 2014 before undergoing Tommy John surgery on his left elbow on April 22. He returned in July 2015 to make 12 starts for the Rays the rest of the year. Moore was 13-12 and set career bests for starts (33), innings (198.1), and strikeouts (178) with the Rays and Giants in 2016. He allowed two runs with 10 strikeouts against Chicago in Game 4 of the 2016 NLDS but had no decision as the Cubs rallied to eliminate the Giants.
Crus was 3-2, 5.91 in 12 games/3 starts with the Arizona League Rangers in 2017, his fourth year in the organization. Wolff was 2-3, 3.54 with three saves in 16 games at Frisco and 2-2, 2.38 in 24 games at Round Rock this past season, his fifth season with the Texas organization. He had surgery to repair a torn right flexor tendon in August.
With tonight's trade, the Rangers major league roster is at 40 players.
