Tigers to host annual Class Outside Series

Pregame educational programs scheduled; Speakers confirmed for April 11 (CSI: Forensic Science) and April 18 (Journalism)

The Detroit Tigers will host their annual “Class Outside Series,” sponsored by Oakland University, at Comerica Park this season. The Class Outside program turns the pregame experience at Comerica Park into a classroom with a series of educational presentations focusing on a variety of subjects. The programs target middle to high school students and are followed by a Tigers game at Comerica Park.

For over 10 years, the Detroit Tigers have welcomed thousands of middle and high school students from all over Southeast Michigan to Comerica Park for the Class Outside Series. The program allows schools the opportunity to combine education with a fun filled afternoon at Comerica Park.

CSI: Forensic Science Day – Thursday, April 11

The Tigers will host the first installment of their Class Outside Series with CSI: Forensic Science Day on April 11, prior to the 1:10 p.m. game against the Cleveland Indians. Students will experience an interactive and educational program in areas of Forensic Science from the Michigan State Police – Forensic Science Division and Dr. Kelly Berishaj – Director, Forensic Nursing at Oakland University. In addition, the guest speakers will provide their personal testimony in education, experience and career.

Journalism Day – Thursday, April 18

The Tigers will host the second installment of their Class Outside Series with Journalism Day on April 18 prior to the 1:10 p.m. game against the Chicago White Sox. Students will hear from several national and local journalists who cover professional sports. These speakers come from the journalistic specializations of print media, photo journalism, social media and radio-television sports journalism. The event speakers include

Career Day – Thursday, May 9

The Tigers will host the third installment of their Class Outside Series with Career Day, prior to the game on May 9 against the Los Angeles Angels at 1:10 p.m. The pre-game workshop is geared towards middle school, high school and early college students and will focus on careers including marketing, entertainment, sales, client services and more. Speakers will share their real life, day-to-day experiences working in a diverse range of organizations.

S.T.E.A.M. Day – Thursday, May 16

On May 16 the Tigers will host the fourth installment of their Class Outside Series with S.T.E.A.M. Day prior to the 1:10 p.m. game against the Oakland Athletics. This new segment will include speakers from several areas of science, technology, engineering, arts and math who will discuss their career experiences and educational background. Students will learn about the various professions in S.T.E.A.M., including web design, video game design, automotive engineering, and analytics.

Weather Day – Thursday, May 23

The Tigers will host the fifth and final installment of their 2019 Class Outside Series with Weather Day, on May 23 prior to the 1:10 p.m. game against the Miami Marlins. The Imagination Station will host this program with the help of the FOX-2 Weather Authority to create an interactive experience for students that includes science experiments focusing on: how clouds are made, how to create a rocket, anemometers, barometers and more. It is a fun display of science, weather and baseball.
