Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN - The Minnesota Twins announced tonight that they have selected outfielder Trevor Larnach (LAR-nick) from Oregon State University in Corvallis, OR with the 20th overall selection in the first round of the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
The 21-year-old is currently playing his junior season at Oregon State University. At 6-foot-4, 210-pounds, Larnach has hit .327 (70-for-214) with 13 doubles, 17 home runs and 65 RBI in 58 games for the Beavers this season. In three seasons at OSU has combined to hit .298 (138-for-463) with 30 doubles, 20 home runs and 116 RBI in 146 games. The Beavers' cleanup hitter hit .400 (4-for-10) and was named to the Corvallis All-Regional Team in 2018. The Beavers move on to play in the Super Regionals against the University of Minnesota this weekend.
In 2017 was named an All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention, Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention and named to the Corvallis Regional All-Tournament Team. A graduate of College Park HS in Pleasant Hill, CA, Larnach was named a First-Team All-State and All-League as a junior and senior and was rated No. 328 nationally among high school prospects by Perfect Game. Larnach was originally selected by the Padres in the 40th round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft but did not sign.
This is the first time the Twins have selected a collegiate outfielder with their first selection in the draft since 1969 when they drafted Paul Powell from Arizona State University, and just the third time ever (Alexander Rowell from Luther College in 1968). The last collegiate outfielder selected by the Twins in the first round was outfielder Brett Rooker, who the Twins took with their second selection in the first supplemental round of 2017 out of Mississippi State. Additionally, the Twins have selected a position player in the first round four times since 2014 (Royce Lewis in 2017, Alex Kirilloff in 2016, and Nick Gordon in 2014).
This year marks the seventh time in Twins history they have had the 20th overall selection in the MLB Draft, doing so in 2006 (OF Chris Parmelee), 2004 (SS Trevor Plouffe), 2002 (OF Denard Span), 1993 (OF Torii Hunter), 1988 (RHP Johnny Ard) and 1966 (3B Bob Jones).
Since the 2001 Draft, 15 of the Twins first round selections have reached the major leagues and four are on the Twins roster, including Byron Buxton (2nd overall in 2012), José Berríos (32nd overall in 2012), Kyle Gibson (22nd overall in 2009), and Joe Mauer (1st overall in 2001).
Trevor Larnach was recommended by Twins scout Kyle Blackwell.
