The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms with international free agent Jefferson Mendoza.
Mendoza, 16, is a 6-foot, 170-pound, right-handed-hitting catcher from Cumana, Venezuela.
"Jefferson is a plus defensive catcher with an excellent frame for the position," said Marco Paddy, special assistant to the general manager, international operations. "His abilities to handle a pitching staff and call a game should help him develop quickly."
Earlier this spring, the White Sox signed Cuban free agent outfielder Luis Robert to a Minor League deal. Robert, who signed on May 27 and currently plays in the Dominican Summer League, is currently ranked by MLB.com as the No. 23 prospect in baseball.
Mendoza joins outfielders Josue Guerrero (2016), Franklin Reyes (2015) and Micker Adolfo (2013) and infielder Amado Nunez (2014) among the Sox most recent international signings. Adolfo is ranked by MLB.com as the No. 21 prospect in the White Sox organization.
