Yankee Stadium, in conjunction with TEG Sport, today announced that it would host a preseason soccer match between Liverpool FC and Wrexham AFC on Wednesday, July 29. The kickoff time of the contest will be announced at a future date.

Founded in 1892, Liverpool FC is the current reigning Premier League champion and one of the world’s most historic and famous football clubs, having won 20 league titles, eight FA Cups, 10 League Cups, six European Cups, three UEFA Cups and four European Super Cups. This will mark Liverpool’s third appearance at the current Yankee Stadium. On July 24, 2019, the Reds played Sporting CP to a 2-2 draw, and on July 30, 2014, they defeated Manchester City in a penalty shootout (3-1) after a 2-2 tie in regulation time. Additionally, Liverpool played a match at the original Yankee Stadium, drawing, 1-1, with Young Boys of Switzerland on June 14, 1953.
Wrexham AFC was founded in 1864 and is the third-oldest professional soccer team in the world. Over the last three seasons, the club became the first team in the history of English football to receive three consecutive promotions, going from the National League at the end of the 2022-23 season to playing in the second-tier Championship this season. Their recent success aligns with the February 9, 2021, takeover of the club by Rob Mac (formerly McElhenney) and Ryan Reynolds. Since then, the club has become recognized around the world through the award-winning documentary Welcome to Wrexham. Wrexham has won the Welsh Cup a record 23 times and has beaten some of the biggest clubs in soccer in the English FA Cup and UEFA European Cup Winners Cup. Wrexham’s home stadium, the STōK Cae Ras, is the world’s oldest stadium that continues to host international games.
The original Yankee Stadium hosted dozens of soccer matches featuring clubs from around the world, and the tradition has continued at the current Yankee Stadium. In addition to serving as the primary home of Major League Soccer’s New York City FC since it began play in 2015, the current Stadium has hosted seven prior European friendlies — July 27, 2024: AC Milan 3 – Manchester City 2; July 24, 2019: Liverpool 2 − Sporting CP 2; July 30, 2014: Liverpool 2 (3) – Man. City 2 (1); June 11, 2013: Spain 2 − Ireland 0; May 25, 2013: Manchester City 5 − Chelsea 3; August 8, 2012: Real Madrid 5 − AC Milan 1; and July 22, 2012: Chelsea 1 − PSG 1.
About Yankee Stadium
Located on E. 161st Street between River and Jerome Avenues in the Bronx, Yankee Stadium first opened its doors for the 2009 baseball season. The venue is one of New York City’s most-frequented tourist destinations and home to the 27-time World Series champion New York Yankees — the most successful and popular team in Major League Baseball history. It also serves as the primary home venue for Major League Soccer’s New York City FC and is the setting for college football’s Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl. Yankee Stadium has held and continues to hold numerous non-baseball events, including regular season college football, concerts, international soccer friendlies, ice hockey, boxing, NYU commencement ceremonies, New York City high school baseball and football championship games, corporate and private events, and a wide range of community outreach programming that serves Bronx residents and individuals throughout the five boroughs.
