The New York Yankees today announced that they have acquired first baseman Garrett Cooper from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for left-handed pitcher Tyler Webb. Cooper was assigned today to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Cooper, 26, was batting .366 (102-for-279) with 64R, 29 doubles, 17HR, 82RBI and 33BB in 75 games with the Brewers' Triple-A Colorado Springs affiliate in the Pacific Coast League. At the All-Star break, leads all Triple-A players in batting average and doubles, and ranks second in the PCL in RBI, on-base percentage (.428) and slugging (.652), is tied for second in extra-base hits (46), and is third in runs scored. The right-handed hitter went 1-for-3 with 1R and 1RBI in Wednesday's Triple-A All-Star Game.
A native of Torrance, Calif., Cooper was selected by Milwaukee in the sixth round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft after two seasons at El Camino Community College (Calif.) and his junior and senior seasons at Auburn University. In 446 games over five minor league seasons, he owns a .305 career batting average (474-for-1,552) with 220R, 115 doubles, 44HR and 267RBI.
Webb, 26, made his Major League debut for the Yankees in 2017, posting a 4.50 ERA (6.0IP, 3H, 3ER, 4BB, 5K, 1HR) in seven appearances. In five minor league seasons in the Yankees organization, Webb was 15-14 with a 3.45 ERA (248.0IP, 223H, 105R/95ER, 67BB, 312K, 21HR) in 150 appearances (five starts). Webb was originally selected by the Yankees in the 10th round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft. He was taken by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Major League phase of the 2016 Rule 5 Draft on December 8, 2016, then returned to the Yankees on April 1, 2017.
The Yankees' 40-man roster now stands at 39 players.
