ROBERTO CLEMENTE AWARD WINNER ANNOUNCED TONIGHT: The 2017 Roberto Clemente Award will be announced in a press conference and recognized on-field prior to the start of Game Three. The Roberto Clemente Award is the annual recognition of a Major League player who best represents the game of Baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field. The annual Award pays tribute to Roberto Clemente's achievements and character by recognizing current players who truly understand the value of helping others.
The concept of honoring Major League players for their philanthropic work was created in 1971 as the "Commissioner's Award." It was renamed the "Roberto Clemente Award" in 1973 in honor of the Hall of Famer and 15-time All-Star who died in a plane crash on New Year's Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.
ROBERTO'S HUMANITARIAN LEGACY: In celebration of tonight's announcement, Major League Baseball collaborated with the Houston Astros to host an event earlier today at the Houston Food Bank. Vera Clemente, MLB Goodwill Ambassador and Wife of the late Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente, and Astros Legend Jose Cruz joined MLB & Astros representatives today to package and seal cold meals. The group also put together shelf stable meals for rural communities in the Greater Houston area where the Houston Food Bank has Kids Café sites, which do not have refrigeration or a way to heat meals.
BUDWEISER GOOD SPORT: MLB, Budweiser and Techniques for Effective Alcohol Management (TEAM) Coalition will host Gabby Zavala (Fresno, Texas) as the Houston Astros' winner of the "Responsibility Has Its Rewards" sweepstakes, at Game Three of the World Series presented by YouTube TV. Zavala, who won a pair of tickets to tonight's game, was randomly selected after she pledged to be a designated driver at Minute Maid Park.
GAME BALL DELIVERY: Christian Tilly, 14, from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston Stafford Club, will deliver the game ball of Game Three to the mound. Christian will be joined by Hall of Famer and Astros Legend Craig Biggio. Tilly is a freshman at Stafford High School.
