Building 5
Significance of Number 5
“Building 5” is in recognition of the number Jackie wore in 1945 with the Kansas City Monarchs during his stint in the Negro Leagues. As a member of the Monarchs, Jackie hit .387 with five home runs and 13 stolen bases. He also appeared in the 1945 East-West All-Star Game.
Jackie caught the eye of Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey who was actively scouting the Negro Leagues for the right player to break Brooklyn’s color barrier. That player was Jackie Robinson. The rest, as they say, is history.
