UMPS Care CLE Official Leadership Program

Learn the Game from a New Angle
The Cleveland Guardians, UMPS CARE Charities, and Major League Baseball Umpires invite Northeast Ohio teens ages 13–18 to join the UMPS CARE Official Leadership Program. This free program teaches umpiring on the field and life skills in the classroom, with no experience needed.
What You'll Gain
- Umpiring skills: Learn baseball and softball mechanics from experienced local instructors.
- Life skills: Build goal setting, perseverance, financial literacy, and confident decision-making through a curriculum created with the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
- A paid summer job: Umpires can earn $75 or more per game. Graduates are connected with local assignors and Guardians partner leagues looking for summer umpires.
- Help with gear: Program partners help provide umpire equipment, so cost isn't a barrier.
- Big league access: Meet MLB umpires, hear their stories, and attend a Cleveland Guardians game.
Why It Matters
Across the country, a shortage of sports officials is canceling youth games and tournaments, and kids are losing chances to play. Umpires keep players safe, make sure games are fair, and set the tone for good sportsmanship. A respectful, confident umpire can turn a stressful game into a great one.
Umpiring also helps you grow. You'll learn to stay calm under pressure, make tough calls, and handle disagreements with coaches, players, and parents. Those skills carry over to school, work, and everyday life. You'll also become a role model for younger players in your community.
