PHOENIX -- Marlins catcher Jorge Alfaro, who has played in 120 games this season, has been taking a beating lately, absorbing fouls tips and being struck by the bats on backswings. Normally, the 26-year-old has been able to shake things off and continue playing.

Alfaro was clipped on the back of his left hand by a backswing from leadoff batter Ildemaro Vargas in the first inning of the Marlins' 12-6 win over the D-backs on Tuesday night at Chase Field. Although Alfaro he made it through the inning, he was lifted in the second inning with a hand contusion and replaced by Bryan Holaday.

An X-ray came back negative on Alfaro’s hand, and he will be further evaluated Wednesday.

“The X-ray was negative,” Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. “You don't know how sore guys are going to be tomorrow.”

The Marlins have a day game on Wednesday, and a day off Thursday, and it is likely that Alfaro won't be available to start until Friday against the Nationals at Marlins Park, at the earliest.

“With the off-day and the day after, we'll see where he's at tomorrow,” Mattingly said.

Alfaro had his glove knocked off by Vargas' follow-through, but the catcher still attempted a barehanded play. The ball was caught in foul territory by pitcher Caleb Smith.

Holaday had a big day in place of Alfaro, going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.

“When he took that backswing off the wrist, I knew I had to stay ready,” Holaday said. "He tried to grind it out for us. He couldn't go. So, I tried to stay ready.”

The Marlins are carrying three catchers, with Tyler Heineman as their option after Holaday.
