deGrom's agent in town ... extension next?

Contract talks expected to continue this spring; Lowrie's MRI negative; Mets announce ST giveaways

February 22nd, 2019

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Jacob deGrom’s agents are in town. Brodie Van Wagenen is in town. The Wilpons are in town.

Now, they just have to agree on a deal.

deGrom’s lead agent, Jeff Berry, arrived in Port St. Lucie this week for what a source cautioned was nothing more than a routine check-in with the Mets’ cadre of CAA clients -- deGrom, Tim Tebow, Todd Frazier and several others. While that source would not speculate on the potential for talks to heat up between the Mets and deGrom regarding a contract extension, Van Wagenen said last week that he intended to meet with deGrom’s reps in person this spring.

The Mets have made it clear that they plan to pursue a contract extension with deGrom, who has two seasons left under team control, while deGrom has been open in saying he wants to ink a long-term pact. But that does not mean the numbers will align. deGrom is making $17 million through arbitration this season, and would be due for another raise in 2020.

The reigning National League Cy Young Award winner, deGrom went 10-9 with a 1.70 ERA last season. He is scheduled to make his Grapefruit League debut Sunday against the Astros.

Status quo

Infielder Jed Lowrie flew to New York on Thursday for an examination on his sore left leg and the MRI came back negative. Lowrie said he has been experiencing knee trouble since the early days of Spring Training.

The Mets want to make sure he's 100 percent before using Lowrie in games, so they'll take things slow. Mickey Callaway has said Lowrie will only need about 40 at-bats to be ready for Opening Day, and there's plenty of time for that.

If Lowrie misses significant time, Frazier and Adeiny Hechavarria -- a natural shortstop who played four games at third base for the Yankees last season -- should see additional reps at third.

“That’s one of the reasons we got him,” Callaway said of Hechavarria. “He covers us in so many ways. He’s going to be an elite defender, a Gold Glove-caliber guy wherever you put him.”

What a relief

Unlike last year, the Mets will not stretch out relievers Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman in camp. The club is committed to having both in its Opening Day bullpen, alongside fellow roster locks Edwin Diaz, Jeurys Familia and Justin Wilson.

While Lugo in particular has said publicly that he would like a chance to start, he has also noted that he understands the situation.

“The thing about Lugo is he wants to win more than he wants personal accolades,” Callaway said.

Shortening things up

First baseman Peter Alonso has informed the Mets he would prefer to go by Pete, effective immediately.
