Noah Syndergaard fanned six over six innings in the Mets' 4-0 home-opening loss against the Nationals on Thursday afternoon, but it was his second-inning strikeout of catcher Yan Gomes that surprised even him.
With no outs and runners on second and third, Gomes swung at a curveball out of the zone for the first out of the second, drawing a "huh, not bad" expression from the Mets right-hander.
However, Syndergaard could not prevent the Nats from getting on the board after Wilmer Difo's safety squeeze plated Juan Soto.
