Draft predictions, picks & needs for every team

June 8th, 2020

With this year's Draft days away, MLB.com's beat reporters put together team-specific Draft previews to tell fans what to expect from each of the 30 big league clubs.

The 2020 MLB Draft presented by T-Mobile will begin on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET and will be live on both MLB Network and ESPN.

A quick look at every team is below, with links to the full preview for each:

AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST

Blue Jays (First pick: No. 5 overall)
Making their highest pick since taking Vernon Wells in this same slot in 1997, the Blue Jays could be eyeing one of the top bats in the class in either Nick Gonzalez or Zac Veen -- but will they opt for another college arm instead? More >

Orioles (First pick: No. 2 overall)
With Arizona State slugger Spencer Torkelson likely going off the board first, the O’s will have their choice of Vanderbilt infielder Austin Martin (considered the best pure hitter) or Texas A&M southpaw Asa Lacy (the top pitcher), among others. More >

Rays (First pick: No. 24 overall)
The Rays never shy away from an opportunity to add young pitching to the organization, and that could be the move in this spot. If Tampa Bay indeed takes a pitcher, high schooler Jarred Kelly and Louisville's Bobby Miller are a couple potential options. More >

Red Sox (First pick: No. 17 overall)
The Red Sox are intent on replenishing their farm system, something that starts with the 2020 MLB Draft. High school right-hander Mick Abel is a solid option if he's still on the board, while UCLA outfielder Garrett Mitchell could be the pivot if Abel is no longer available. More >

Yankees (First pick: No. 28 overall)
With the Yanks having forfeited their second- and fifth-round selections as compensation for signing free agent Gerrit Cole, experts believe the club will target a quality position player in the first round -- but who is atop their wishlist? More >

AL CENTRAL

Indians (First pick: No. 23 overall)
As the Indians look to continue adding to an improving farm system, do they have their sights set on Ohio State catcher Dillon Dingler in the first round? More >

Royals (First pick: No. 4 overall)
It's hard to predict what the Royals will do in this spot, though part of that will obviously be dictated by the three clubs drafting ahead of Kansas City. The Royals seemed to be eyeing a college pitcher originally, but now they might be looking at taking one of the top hitting prospects. More >

Tigers (First pick: No. 1 overall)
Barring something unforeseen, the Tigers are widely expected to use the top pick on Arizona State slugger Spencer Torkelson. More >

Twins (First pick: No. 27 overall)
It's anyone's guess who will still be available at this point, but one thing that Jonathan Mayo and Jim Callis at MLB Pipeline seem to agree on is that Minnesota will be looking for a collegiate player -- but will it be a pitcher or a hitter? More >

White Sox (First pick: No. 11 overall)
The White Sox figure to have a few highly regarded prospects to choose from in this spot, including switch-hitting North Carolina State catcher Patrick Bailey, high school shortstop Ed Howard and Louisville southpaw Reid Detmers, among others. More >

AL WEST

Angels (First pick: No. 10 overall)
The Halos could go any number of ways with the No. 10 pick, from high school outfielder Robert Hassell to collegiate pitchers Max Meyer or Cade Cavalli to switch-hitting catcher Patrick Bailey. More >

Astros (First pick: No. 72 overall)
Having lost their first- and second-round picks as part of the punishment handed down by Major League Baseball for sign stealing, the Astros won't make a selection on the first day of the Draft. Though it's impossible to predict who will be on the board by the time Houston makes its first pick at No. 72 overall, do the Astros have a strategy in mind for the compensation pick they gained due to Gerrit Cole signing with the Yankees in free agency? More >

Athletics (First pick: No. 26 overall)
MLB Pipeline gurus Jonathan Mayo and Jim Callis both have the A's taking a right-handed college pitcher with the No. 26 pick -- but plenty of names have been floated as possibilites. More >

Mariners (First pick: No. 6 overall)
The Mariners are in a position to add several impact prospects with four picks among the first 78 selections, starting with targeting the top college talent remaining on the board with the No. 6 overall pick. More >

Rangers (First pick: No. 14 overall)
The MLB Pipeline crew is leaning toward the Rangers taking Tennessee left-hander Garrett Crochet in this spot, but high school right-hander Nick Bitsko could be another option for a team that's proven in the past it has no reservations about taking high school pitchers. More >

NATIONAL LEAGUE EAST

Braves (First pick: No. 25 overall)
MLB Pipeline's latest mock Draft has the Braves taking Texas Tech right-hander Clayton Beeter, but other collegiate right-handers like Chris McMahon (University of Miami), Tanner Burns (Auburn) and Carmen Mlodzinski (South Carolina) could be possible fits. More >

Marlins (First pick: No. 3 overall)
Miami has been linked heavily to Texas A&M left-hander Asa Lacy, but if Vanderbilt infielder Austin Martin is still on the board at No. 3, things could get very interesting for the Marlins. More >

Mets (First pick: No. 19 overall)
The MLB Pipeline team expects the Mets to target pitching with their first pick, but whose name might they call? More >

Nationals (First pick: No. 22 overall)
Righty Cole Wilcox from Georgia could be a match for the Nationals, but will he still be on the board at No. 22? If not, the Nats might look to other collegiate right-handers, like Clayton Beeter (Texas Tech) or Slade Cecconi (Miami). More >

Phillies (First pick: No. 15 overall)
It's hard to project which players from Philadelphia's Draft board will still be available by the middle of the first round, but while the Phils might be hoping to add a hitter in this spot, is it possible they instead take local high school pitcher Nick Bitsko? More >

NL CENTRAL

Brewers (First pick: No. 20 overall)
The Brewers could take a long look at prep outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong if he's still on the board, though a slew of collegiate right-handers -- including Cade Cavalli (Oklahoma), Cole Wilcox (Georgia) and Carmen Mlodzinski (South Carolina), among many others -- could also garner some attention, if available. More >

Cardinals (First pick: No. 21 overall)

It'd be no surprise to see the Cards take a collegiate pitcher in this spot, though they've also been linked to a pair of middle infielders. More >

Cubs (First pick: No. 16 overall)

Prep outfielder Austin Hendrick has been linked to the Cubs in multiple mock Drafts, including from MLB Pipeline. If he's not on the board, or if Chicago opts to go another direction, other potential options include UCLA outfielder Garrett Mitchell or local high school shortstop Ed Howard. More >

Pirates (First pick: No. 7 overall)

Pittsburgh is believed to be targeting college position players with its first pick -- and there should be several intriguing options on the board at No. 7 overall. More >

Reds (First pick: No. 12 overall)

Cincinnati has been linked to collegiate right-hander Cade Cavalli in MLB Pipeline's mock Draft, but the Reds could also go after a high school hitter, like shortstop Ed Howard or outfielder Austin Hendrick. More >

NL WEST

D-backs (First pick: No. 18 overall)

It obviously depends on who's still on the board at this point, but the D-backs could go either way with the No. 18 pick. The club has been linked to high school outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong, but if Arizona decides to go the pitching route, high school right-hander Nick Bitsko could be the pick. More >

Dodgers (First pick: No. 29 overall)

With the Dodgers making the 29th and final pick of the first round, they'll be largely at the mercy of the 28 teams drafting ahead of them. MLB Pipeline has the Dodgers considering Louisville right-hander Bobby Miller, South Carolina righty Carmen Mlodzinski and high school shortstop Ed Howard. More >

Giants (First pick: No. 13 overall)

The Giants could be targeting Oklahoma right-hander Cade Cavalli with their first pick, though he's generated plenty of interest from other teams, as well. If Cavalli isn't on the board, might the Giants turn to a high-upside prep player instead? More >

Padres (First pick: No. 8 overall)

University of Minnesota right-hander Max Meyer has been linked to San Diego in MLB Pipeline's latest mock Draft, but the Padres could also be interested in prep righty Mick Abel, Louisville lefty Reid Detmers and prep outfielder Robert Hassell, among others. More >

Rockies (First pick: No. 9 overall)

Of course, Colorado will need to see who's still available once it's on the clock, but the Rockies could go any number of ways with this pick, from taking a collegiate pitcher (righty or lefty) to a high school hitter. More >
