Will we remember this as the Harry Potter draft?

July 15th, 2022

What's in a name?

Letters. Mostly, it's just letters.

But sometimes those letters can be arranged in a way that's unique or notable or well, just perfect. And over the years, the MLB Draft has been chock full of some of these kinds of names. Prospects like Sicnarf Loopstok and Stone Churby and Ryan Nolan.

The 2022 MLB Draft -- which will run from Sunday to Tuesday during All-Star Weekend -- once again has a bevy of fantastic names that stand out. Check out some of our favorites below.

The 10 Best

1.) Thrasher Steed, P
Gulf Shores High School, Alabama

There may not be a better name ever conceived. Thrasher Steed sounds like a mythical hero -- like a main character in some fantasy novel sent on a journey to save the world from some monstrous villain. Steed is, in reality, just a 6-foot-3, 220-pound pitcher/first baseman from Alabama ... but he's still only 18. He has time to grow into the powerful name and responsibility that's been thrust upon him.

2.) Lake Fisher, OF
Bethune-Cookman University, Florida

There are a few players named Fisher on the list, but only one is a lake fisher. Even though this outfielder grew up in Dunedin along the rich waters of Florida's Gulf Coast, he only, at least if we go by his name, fished in lakes. Perhaps Lake Tarpon -- which has one five-star review and is rated as "beautiful and serene!"

3.) Jett Williams, SS
Rockwall-Heath High School, Texas

Words like quickness and speed are mentioned at least four times on Jett Williams' scouting report and, although there's no mention of him outrunning a beast like another famous baseball Jet, there is a short film about his meteoric rise.

4.) Cannon Pickell, P
Pitt CC, North Carolina

Maybe you've somehow seen a pickle cannon in real life or for some reason read That Pesky Pickle by Jamie Canon. But have you ever heard of Cannon Pickell -- the All-American pitcher out of North Carolina? You have now and you'll never forget him.

5.) Shaddon Peavyhouse, P
UNC, North Carolina

Shaddon Peavyhouse and Cannon Pickell missed being in the same UNC rotation by a year, which is something we'll probably never, ever get over. Shaddon Peavyhouse also sounds like something this batter would yell after striking out against Shaddon Peavyhouse's slider. Shaddon Peavyhouse!

6.) Juan Gonzalez-Molina, SS
Erskine College, South Carolina

If this player is everything his name says he is, we could see multiple MVP Awards, nine Gold Gloves, more than 600 homers and perennial All-Star appearances.

7.) Q Phillips, OF
Iowa-Western CC, Iowa

Q is described as being a very good athlete with medium athletic build, good present strength and room for more. He likely has other secret talents -- like grenade pens and missiles that shoot out of his foot.

8.) Chandler Best, P
Southern Mississippi, Mississippi

See name of category above.

9.) Ledgend Smith, P
Oral Roberts, Oklahoma

You know what's pretty awesome? Being a top pitcher on a championship-winning team. What's even more awesome? Being a top pitcher on a championship-winning team while also having a name that sounds like an early-2000s summer blockbuster starring Tom Cruise and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

10.) Cutter Coffey, SS
Liberty High School, California

Hopefully teams like their Cutt-er Coffey two ways because that's what they'll be getting drafting this player out of Bakersfield, Calif.

Fictional Characters

Harry Potter, P
Puerto Rico Baseball Academy, Puerto Rico

He's the boy who lived ... from Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Teams will hope he not only brings his fastball, but his variety of spells and trusty Firebolt broomstick.

William Butcher, OF
UNC Charlotte, North Carolina

When Billy Butcher sees a pitch he really likes, one has to wonder if he stares quickly at the pitcher and lets out a guttural "Oi!" before blasting a dinger over the fence.

Zack Morris, P
University of Arkansas, Arkansas

There's a good chance Zack is having a live watch party at The Max with Slater, Kelly, Screech and the rest of the gang. Let's hope he gets a call from a team over the weekend.
