Cain on WC roster, playing CF, hitting 7th

WASHINGTON -- The Brewers’ 25-man roster for Tuesday’s National League Wild Card Game is set, and center fielder was on it.

So are 10 pitchers including scheduled starter , and 15 position players.

Cain, whose availability was not assured until he tested his sprained left ankle in the Brewers’ optional workout at Nationals Park on Monday, was later announced as the Crew's starting center fielder in the win-or-go-home Wild Card tilt, hitting seventh against Nats starter Max Scherzer. He is among a number of Brewers regulars fighting through physical matters that qualify as more than the usual aches and pains. Cain last played Saturday, when he re-injured his ankle in a hard slide into home plate. Left fielder hasn’t played since Friday, when he strained his left calf. Third baseman missed two games last week with a sore throwing elbow. First baseman has been fighting his hamstrings.

But Cain is the most compromised of that group.

“We’re not going to get the amount of time that we really want, and it’s going to impact him,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said Monday. “I think we know that.”
