Kapler briefs young outfielders on Harper's effect

Kapler praises young core; Realmuto goes deep

March 1st, 2019

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Phillies manager Gabe Kapler had conversations with some of his young outfielders on Friday to discuss the ripple effect of Bryce Harper’s impending arrival. To sum up: there are still jobs to be won.

“The message was pretty simple,” Kapler said. “There’s a guy in left field who’s going to play just about every day []. There’s a guy in right field that’s going to play just about every day [].

“There’s a lot of competition for the remaining at-bats. There’s a lot of opportunity both on the starting front and also coming off the bench. I shared that with those guys.”

Kapler said he intended to “hammer that message home” with two of his top prospects, Mickey Moniak and Adam Haseley.

“The outfielders that are in camp, we shared that message with them,” Kapler said. “We shared it with them strongly, and they understand the landscape very well.”

As for Moniak and Haseley, both clearly received the message. With Harper formally joining the Phils as early as Saturday, Haseley started in left and Moniak in center in Friday’s 7-3 victory over the Pirates.

Haseley homered, singled and drove in four runs. Moniak had one triple in three at-bats. Kapler praised both players as well as right-hander , who pitched three scoreless innings with five strikeouts.

Kapler said he was appreciative that Phillies general manager Matt Klentak had been able to add quality players during the offseason while keeping a nice core of youngsters intact.

“Matt was able to make a lot of acquisitions without giving up some young exciting players that have made an impression early in camp,” Kapler said, “and Drew Anderson is one of those guys. He’s featuring a cutter that he’s just started working on that is proving to be really effective.

“I think Mickey Moniak’s triple stood out to me as one of the better moments of the spring. He never broke stride the entire play, right out of the box. Lot to be excited about on the young player front.”
