That red (not green) monster on 'The Masked Singer' was ... Big Papi?

January 8th, 2026

You already know 's favorite catchphrase: "Daaaa Yankees lose." But on Wednesday night, it was Big Papi doing some losing of his own.

The Hall of Famer and Red Sox icon was revealed as a contestant on the premiere of a new season of "The Masked Singer" on FOX, and if you're not up on the rules of the show, that actually meant he was eliminated. Ortiz received the fewest votes following his performance of DJ Snake and Lil' John's "Turn Down for What," opening him up for the unveiling portion of the show.

Before Ortiz stepped out of his furry red Googly Eyed Monster costume (missed opportunity to be clad as a Green Monster, but perhaps that would have been too obvious), the panel of judges had an opportunity to guess who they thought was behind the mask. Most of them gathered from the clues dropped throughout the episode that the man behind the mask was a baseball player, with Jenny McCarthy predicting it was Derek Jeter.

Instead it was Jeter's former nemesis and current co-host on FOX Sports, and the panel got a lot of laughs out of seeing the 6-foot-3 Papi climb out of his costume. It was the biggest costume ever used in the history of the show, according to host Nick Cannon, despite the multiple NBA players who have come across its stage, including the 6-foot-10 big man Dwight Howard.

Ortiz said after his elimination that performing was no easy feat, calling it a "straight-up workout" to move around in such a clunky costume.

"I don't need to go to the gym for about a month," he said.

Maybe we should have seen Big Papi's turn on a singing competition coming when he broke out the bass voice to belt "O Canada" for Blue Jays rookie pitcher Trey Yesavage during a postgame interview after Game 6 of the ALCS.

At least for his performance as the Googly Eyed Monster, Big Papi remembered the words.
