LA's 5 HRs 'a clinic' in 3rd straight SD sweep

October 1st, 2021

LOS ANGELES -- When Gavin Lux showed up to the ballpark on Thursday, the first thing the Dodgers wanted to know was whether the young infielder-turned-outfielder was feeling OK. Once Lux relayed that he was feeling fine, he was notified that there was a surprise waiting for him on the center-field wall.

It was the outline of a body imprinted into the wall, a “tribute” to Lux, who went face-first into the wall on Wednesday. It was a moment of levity for a situation that could’ve been much worse. Turns out that Lux’s body outline had the best seat in the house for the Dodgers’ laser show.

A night after hitting five homers in the last two innings of a dramatic comeback win, the offense picked up right where it left off, smacking four solo home runs in the first four innings as the Dodgers completed the three-game sweep of the Padres with a 8-3 win at Dodger Stadium, a third consecutive series sweep of San Diego.

With the win, the Dodgers stayed two games behind the Giants, who beat the D-backs on Thursday, in the National League West race with three games remaining in the regular season. The Dodgers wrap up the season with a three-game series against the Brewers. San Francisco will host San Diego.

“Tonight was a clinic,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts on the offense. “Guys came focused and with energy and obviously, a sold-out crowd, we fed off that. Really good series all the way around.”

For the second consecutive night, it was that got the offense started for the Dodgers. Betts didn’t waste any time, hitting a leadoff homer off Padres right-hander Vince Velasquez. then followed Betts’ lead, launching a homer of his own to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead just two batters into the game.

Remarkably, Betts and Seager weren’t the only ones that went back to back. In the fourth, and each launched solo homers over the left-center-field fence to extend the Dodgers’ lead. After manufacturing three runs in the sixth, Seager smashed the fifth homer of the night for the Dodgers and his second of the night in the seventh.

“It’s super good to get wins,” Betts said. “It’s been a while since [the offense has] clicked. It’s just good to know we can do it.”

The offense has been led by Seager, who must know that October is right around the corner. Seager, who won National League Championship Series and World Series MVP in the Dodgers’ title run last season, is starting to get hot at the right time once again.

“We saw it all postseason and the last five weeks, this is what we’ve seen,” Roberts said of Seager's recent performance. “He’s slugging a lot more, but as far as the at-bats he’s putting together, it’s been really remarkable.”

With a 3-for-4 performance on Thursday, Seager put the finishing touches on a red-hot September, posting a .366 batting average with eight homers and 19 RBIs. Over the last two nights, the star shortstop has recorded three doubles and three homers. Those hits haven’t been cheap, either. Seager became the first Dodger with multiple homers with an exit velocity of 110 mph or higher in one game since Statcast began tracking in 2015.

“He’s a special hitter,” Turner said. “He knows what he wants to do and he knows his swing as good as anyone. I would say right now, he looks pretty familiar. He looks very similar to that ‘bubble’ Corey Seager we saw last year in the postseason.”

The Dodgers wrapped up their 103rd win of the season, but they won’t control their own fate heading into the final weekend of the regular season. They’ll need to sweep the series against the Brewers, all while hoping the Giants drop at least two against the Padres.

Regardless of what happens, the Dodgers appear to be playing loose and their lineup has shown flashes of how good they can be in the postseason.

“This is two teams playing really good baseball in a pennant race,” Roberts said. “We just have to play good baseball, and however we get there, if we do that, bring it on. It doesn’t matter who we play, or what format.”
