CLEVELAND, OH – The Cleveland Guardians will send three players to the Major League All-Star Game following tonight’s announcement by Major League Baseball. RHP Cade Smith, LHP Parker Messick and 2B Travis Bazzana earned first-time berths following outstanding first-halves to date. Messick and Bazzana become the fourth and fifth Cleveland rookies, respectively, named to an All-Star team in franchise history, first since Sandy Alomar Jr. in 1990.
Smith, 27, has posted a 2-1 record with a 2.97 ERA and a Major League-leading 26 saves in 29 opportunities (90%) in 37 appearances to date (39.1IP, 36H, 13ER, 10BB, 57SO). He has converted 23 of his last 24 save chances (96%) dating back to April 16, recording 21 consecutive conversions from April 16-June 18 on his way to AL Reliever of the Month honors for May (1.32 ERA, 2ER/13.2IP). May saw him become one of four pitchers in MLB history to have 13+ saves and 25+ strikeouts in a calendar month and the first Guardians pitcher in club history to record 13-straight saves in a calendar month.
In addition to leading the Majors in saves, he ranks fourth among American League relievers in strikeouts, fifth in strikeouts per 9.0 IP (13.04) and third in strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.7/1). The Guardians are 34-3 over Cade’s appearances, recently recording at least one strikeout in a career-high 23 straight appearances, Apr. 29-June 28.
Messick, 25, has gone 7-5 with a 2.85 ERA (34R/32ER, 101.0IP) in 17 games/starts entering tonight’s start against the White Sox (106 SO, 29BB). The Florida State product currently ranks in the top-5 among qualified MLB rookies in ERA (2nd), strikeouts (2nd), wins (T2nd) and WHIP (3rd, 1.06), while also ranking among AL pitchers in ERA (5th), average against (7th, .214), innings (8th), WHIP (8th) and strikeouts (10th).
In just 24 career games/starts, the lefty has gone 10-6 with a 2.82 ERA (46R/44ER, 140.2IP), the lowest ERA by a Cleveland pitcher in their first 24 games (min. 100IP) since Dennis Eckersley in 1975 (2.33ERA, 24G/14GS). Messick becomes just the third Guardians pitcher to make an All-Star game as a rookie, joining LHP Dick Stigman in 1960 and LHP Herb Score in 1955.
Bazzana, 23, is the fourth Australian native to receive an All-Star selection, following RHP Liam Hendriks (2019, 2021 & 2022), RHP Grant Balfour (2013) and C/OF/1B David Nilsson (1999). After a solid start to his 2026 season at Triple-A Columbus (.287/.422/.511/.933), the Sydney, Australia native has batted .255 (54-for-212) with 12 doubles, 1 triple, 7 homers, 27 RBI and 12 steals in 57 games. Since his debut on April 28, he leads AL second basemen in RBI (27) and walks (29), while ranking in the top-3 in OPS (.767, 2nd), home runs (7, 3rd) and hits (54, T3rd). Over that same stretch, Bazzana has led the Guardians in hits, runs (27), home runs, RBI and on-base percentage (.347). He is just the second rookie position player in club history to receive an All-Star nod, joining Sandy Alomar Jr. in 1990.
Cleveland has now had multiple AL All-Stars, dating back to 2016. Only New York-AL (1973) and Los Angeles-NL (1989) have enjoyed longer active streaks with multiple All-Stars.
