How low can Wenninger's ERA go? Mets No. 5 prospect ups Triple-A scoreless streak

It was a busy Tuesday evening for top five prospects within the Mets organization.

On the same night A.J. Ewing (NYM No. 2/MLB No. 78) earned the call to The Show for his MLB debut, Jack Wenninger (NYM No. 5) turned in another impressive start for Triple-A Syracuse.

The 6-foot-4 right-hander allowed just one hit -- a single to Scranton/Wilkes Barre’s Marco Luciano (Yankees) -- across five strong frames. He walked three hitters and struck out seven in his seventh start of the year at PNC Field.

Wenninger ran his fastball up to 96.1 mph and racked up 10 swings-and-misses in the outing. He attacked right-handed hitters with his slider (32.6 percent usage rate) and opted to prioritize his changeup (38.5 percent usage rate) against left-handed bats.

Syracuse’s defense backed up its starter as Wenninger induced inning-ending double-play balls in the first and fifth innings, helping the 24-year-old lower his ERA to 1.08. He hasn't allowed a run over his past three starts, extending his scoreless-inning streak to 16 2/3 frames.

Wenninger posted a scoreless start for the fourth time and completed five innings for the third time so far in 2026. The '23 sixth-rounder posted a sub-3.00 ERA for Double-A Binghamton in 2025 and looks well on his way to another pivotal season of development.

New York has more young pitching depth on the doorstep with the organization’s top two pitching prospects at Triple-A with Wenninger and Jonah Tong (NYM No. 1/MLB No. 36), the Minors' strikeout leader (52) entering the night.
