NEW YORK -- The Mets added a bit of outfield depth to their organization on Wednesday, signing Player Page for Zach Borenstein to a Minor League contract with an invitation to big league Spring Training.
Borenstein, 27, has never appeared in the Majors, but was the Angels' 2013 Minor League Player of the Year and the Class A California League co-MVP that same season. Last year, he hit .279 with 27 doubles, seven triples, 24 home runs, 91 RBIs and a .351 on-base percentage in 122 games for Arizona's Triple-A affiliate Reno affiliate. He also went 5-for-25 with three doubles and two RBIs in six games for Team Israel in the World Baseball Classic.

The Angels' 23rd-round Draft pick in 2011, Borenstein is a career .283 Minor League hitter with 99 home runs, spending most of his time at the corner outfield positions.

The Mets lost a modicum of outfield depth last month, when Travis Taijeron became a Minor League free agent. Though Yoenis Cespedes, Michael Conforto, Brandon Nimmo and Juan Lagares should form the Mets' outfield core heading into 2017, the club is unsure if Conforto will be recovered from shoulder surgery in time for Opening Day. The Mets are also looking into acquiring a Major Leaguer with outfield experience this offseason.
Borenstein is the Mets' second Minor League signing of the offseason. Last week, the team inked left-handed pitcher Matt Purke, a former first-round Draft pick.
