No. 3 prospect Kopech absent from camp's start

July 3rd, 2020

CHICAGO -- Michael Kopech was not with the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field on Friday for the opening of Summer Camp.

According to general manager Rick Hahn, the right-handed hurler was excused with permission from the club to not report on Day 1 so he could attend to a personal matter. At this time, Hahn did not have a timeline or time frame for Kopech’s return.

Hahn said he will not be providing updates until the White Sox know Kopech’s plan going forward, a point reiterated by manager Rick Renteria. Hahn added that Kopech is currently healthy.

“It's obviously never ideal when any individual is dealing with off-field matters,” said Hahn during a Friday afternoon Zoom call following the team’s morning workouts. “It's easy, I suppose, at times to lose sight of the fact that you're dealing with human beings here. And this is obviously a very unique time we're all living through.

“So, again, it's not ideal, but fundamentally, we're looking to put all our players in the best position they can be to perform and maximize their abilities on the field. And if there's anything standing in the way of that, we're going to provide them with whatever support and resources they need to help address those matters. I know it's very general, and I'm not going to get more specific than that, other than we fully support Michael and are going to provide him whatever time and resources he needs and look forward to seeing him in the future.”

Kopech, 24, underwent Tommy John surgery in September 2018 and has not pitched in a big league game since Sept. 5 of that season. He carefully and meticulously worked his way back, becoming a more complete pitcher along the rehab trail, and the No. 3 White Sox prospect per MLB Pipeline showed off that high-octane fastball and electric stuff by hitting 100 mph with six pitches during his one 2020 Cactus League inning on March 10 against the Rangers.

The long layoff due to the coronavirus pandemic left Kopech without restrictions, giving the White Sox extra rotation depth approaching this 60-game season. But even without Kopech at the camp’s outset, Chicago will still have plenty of starting options.

Lucas Giolito, Dallas Keuchel, Dylan Cease, Reynaldo López and Gio González made up the front five in March. Carlos Rodón, who has 90 career starts for the White Sox and fanned 519 in 529 career innings, is now available after working through his own Tommy John surgery rehab. The same holds true for right-handers Dane Dunning and Jimmy Lambert, who are part of the White Sox 44-man player pool.

“We still have our opportunities to learn about the guys we do have and how they've come out of rehabs and all the things that they've been going through,” said Renteria during a Friday Zoom call. “And maybe it puts us in a position where we're able to be a little more creative and take advantage of these guys. Fortunately for us, they're healthy; they've been working. We'll have a lot of tough decisions to make, but they're good decisions that we'll have to make as we move forward.”

“I really don’t have to say much about [our starting pitchers],” said White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson. “Just the names speak for themselves. They are going to be just fine. They are going to pick up right where they left off.”
