PHILADELPHIA -- On Friday night, the Diamondbacks were without the services of All-Star outfielder Corbin Carroll for the second straight night due to a tight hip flexor. Catcher Gabriel Moreno, their No. 4 hitter and a key offensive contributor, was forced to leave the game in the third inning. Their starting pitcher gave up four runs before recording an out.
Despite all of that, it was the Diamondbacks who were shaking hands after the final out as they beat the Phillies, 5-4, at Citizens Bank Park in the series opener.
It looked like it was going to be a long night for the Diamondbacks when the first four Philadelphia hitters went single, walk, double, homer off right-hander Michael Soroka.
The right-hander, though, settled in after that and managed to keep the Phillies off the board until departing with two outs in the sixth inning.
The Diamondbacks offense, on the other hand, started slowly as Jesús Luzardo held them hitless through four innings.
But in the fifth, the Diamondbacks sent 10 men to the plate, capitalizing on a walk and a bunt single before a two-run double from James McCann, who had entered the game for Moreno, which scored their fourth and fifth runs of the inning to chase Luzardo from the game.
