WSH-LAD: Lineups, rosters, FAQ (TBS)

October 4th, 2019

LOS ANGELES -- It’s not an elimination game, but Game 2 is close to a must-win contest for the Nationals after getting blanked, 6-0, in the series opener.

The Dodgers threw just about everything they had at Washington in Game 1 -- stifling starting pitching, lockdown relief, a pair of homers and patient at-bats. And everything went wrong for the Nats -- errors in the field, poor relief pitching, walks issued by their pitchers and their hitters chasing pitches out of the zone.

What are the starting lineups?
Nationals:
Despite the fact that Howie Kendrick made a pair of errors at first base in Game 1, the Nats kept him at second base for Game 2. And with lefty Clayton Kershaw on the mound for Los Angeles, Ryan Zimmerman was inserted into the lineup for defense and to help spark an offense that managed only two hits on Thursday.

Who are the starting pitchers?
Nationals:
Strasburg (18-6, 3.32 ERA) returns to the mound three days after pitching three innings of relief during the National League Wild Card Game vs. the Brewers on Tuesday night. But when Strasburg is at his best, he has been dominant in the postseason with a playoff resume that speaks for itself -- 0.41 ERA in 22 innings with 28 strikeouts and four walks. Strasburg is 3-5 with a 2.54 ERA in 11 career starts against the Dodgers. He’s 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA in two starts against them this year.

Dodgers: When you’re facing Strasburg, it’s good to have a three-time NL Cy Young Award winner starting Game 2. Kershaw (16-5, 3.03 ERA) is starting Game 2 so he can relieve if there’s a Game 5, but that might be moot if he outpitches Strasburg. Kershaw hasn’t started in eight days, but he threw one inning of relief in Sunday's regular-season finale vs. the Giants. In his only start against the Nationals this season, Kershaw allowed two runs over six innings on July 27.

How will the bullpens line up after the starter?
Nationals:
The Nationals attempted to get through Game 1 with their "B" bullpen, and they paid for it. But it means both right-hander and lefty will be fresh and available for more than three outs tonight. In a perfect world for manager Dave Martinez, he might attempt to get through the game with just Strasburg, Hudson and Doolittle.

Dodgers: Despite allowing a leadoff double, right-hander Joe Kelly pitched a scoreless ninth inning in Game 1, striking out Rendon and Soto to end the game. Not bad considering he was almost invisible the final two weeks of the regular season. Kelly might not be used in back-to-back games, but , Pedro Báez, Julio Urías and Dustin May will all be fresh.

Are there any relievers who are unavailable?
Nationals:
Likely , who threw 27 pitches in the eighth inning. But the Nats are unlikely to use him past mop-up duty anyway.

Dodgers: Probably after he retired five batters in Game 1, and possibly Kelly.

Any injuries of note?
Nationals:
None.

Dodgers: In Game 1, Turner went 1-for-5 with two strikeouts in his first game in more than a week after missing time with a sprained left ankle. Kelly, who missed some time late in the regular season with an unspecified condition, looked healthy.

Who is hot and who is not?
Nationals:
The Nats' offense has gone cold through the first two games of this postseason run. They had only one run before rallying for three runs against the Brewers in the eighth inning in the NL Wild Card Game, then got shut out in Game 1 of this series while managing only two hits.

Dodgers: Three RBIs from Muncy were big in Game 1, considering his recent recovery from a broken wrist. Bellinger struck out twice, but he also walked twice, the latter probably more important than the former. Pollock struck out three times.
