Stars of tomorrow will participate in the MLB All-Star Futures Game, Sunday, July 12, at noon ET at Citizens Bank Park (NBC). Phillies representatives will be right-handed pitchers Gage Wood and Wen-Hui Pan.

Larry Bowa and Shane Victorino, a pair of Phillies legends, will manage the teams. The prospects will play a seven-inning game with some of Minor League Baseball’s best promotions, mascots and entertainment filling the atmosphere. Among the coaches, Phillies alumni Juan Samuel, Milt Thompson, Michael Bourn and Billy Wagner.

Aaron Nola, Alex Bohm, Bryson Stott and Justin Crawford, among the current team, have played in the game. Phillies Wall of Famers who participated are Pat Burrell and Chase Utley.

History

The game was conceived by Jimmie Lee Solomon, an executive vice president of baseball operations for Major League Baseball, looking for an event to showcase the Minor Leagues and round out the All-Star Week festivities.

Since 1999, the Futures Game has become a big event for teams' player development departments, a coveted resumé filler for players.

Until 2019, the format pitted a team of top Minor League prospects from the United States against a team of counterparts hailing from outside the United States. Early versions of the game created marginal interest in the baseball community, but the event got bigger as time went by. There was a major overhaul of the format in 2019, when the game was scaled back to seven innings and now pitted top prospects from teams in the American League against those from teams in the National League, much like the All-Star Game itself.

Rosters are selected by a joint committee from MLB, MLB.com and Baseball America magazine, in conjunction with MLB and the 30 clubs. Every organization is represented, with no more than two players (although there have been exceptions), and 25 players per team. They were previously divided into U.S. and World teams based on place of birth (although a few players born in the United States have played with the World team when they have strong connections to another country).

The first nine games lasted seven innings, regardless of the score, but were extended to a full nine innings for 2008. The game returned to seven innings in 2019.

The Larry Doby Award is given to the game's most valuable player, in honor of the Hall of Fame legend who broke the American League color barrier.
