Phils decline Hughes, Neshek, Vargas' options

Arrieta exercises $20 million player option for 2020

November 4th, 2019

PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies trimmed their 40-man roster to 35 players with a series of moves they announced Monday.

They declined team options for right-handers Jared Hughes ($250,000 buyout) and Pat Neshek ($750,000 buyout) and left-hander Jason Vargas ($2 million buyout). Right-hander Jake Arrieta exercised his $20 million player option for 2020. Right-handers Jerad Eickhoff, Mike Morin, Blake Parker and Edubray Ramos and infielder Phil Gosselin each elected free agency after the Phillies outrighted them from the roster.

None of the moves were considered surprises, especially Hughes, Neshek and Vargas. Hughes had a 3.91 ERA in 25 appearances with the Phillies, but posted a 6.47 FIP. Neshek finished the season on the injured list following surgery to repair a torn right hamstring. He pitched only 42 1/3 innings the past two seasons after the Phillies re-signed him to a two-year, $16.5 million contract before 2018. Vargas went 1-4 with a 5.37 ERA in 11 starts with the Phillies, who acquired him on July 29 from the Mets.

The Phillies are expected to upgrade both their rotation and bullpen before Spring Training. It explains why they also outrighted Eickhoff, Morin, Parker and Ramos from the roster. Eickhoff showed immediate promise after the Phillies acquired him in July 2015 in the Cole Hamels trade with the Rangers, but he made only 15 appearances the past two seasons because of injuries and ineffectiveness.

The team reinstated outfielder Odubel Herrera from the restricted list. He was suspended most of the season for violating the leagues’s domestic abuse policy. He could be traded in the offseason. The team reinstated right-handers Arrieta, Víctor Arano, Seranthony Domínguez, David Robertson and Robert Stock; left-hander Adam Morgan and outfielder Andrew McCutchen from the 60-day injured list.
