Rangers designate Lohse for assignment

ARLINGTON -- The Rangers designated right-hander Kyle Lohse for assignment in order to make room on the roster for Tuesday night's starter Nick Martínez, who was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock.
Lohse, 37, was signed by the Rangers to a Minor League deal on May 14, and was called up on July 9 to help when injuries hit the starting rotation. In two starts, he was 0-2 with a 12.54 ERA, and allowed 15 hits in 9 1/3 innings.
"This is a veteran guy with 16 years, I think he understands that process," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. "I'm sure if there's a Major League opportunity out there for him, he'd much rather have that opportunity."
Martinez is making his third stint with the Rangers this year. He entered Tuesday's start with a 6.45 ERA.
He had a 3.96 ERA in 24 games (21 starts) with the Rangers last season.
"When he was here [this year], he was 51 percent strikes," Banister said. "Last year when he was here and having success, he was in the 60-percent range. That in itself is probably [problem] No. 1."
Rangers' beat
• Banister did not have an update on the status of left-hander César Ramos. He was designated for assignment on July 22.
"He's still in the middle of that process," Banister said.
• Elvis Andrus was given the day off Tuesday as Jurickson Profar filled in at shortstop. Banister said he he was a little banged up after the team's 10-day, three-city road trip.
"Those games took a little bit of a toll on him. Felt like it was a good time to get him off his feet," Banister said.
• Adrián Beltré provided the winning hit Monday night with his ninth career walk-off home run in a 4-for-5 game. He's just the third player in Rangers history with four hits and a walk-off home run in the same game. The last to do it was Alex Rodriguez in 2002.
