Rangers make flurry of roster moves before DH

Heineman, Valdez recalled from Triple-A; Sampson placed on 10-day IL

August 20th, 2019

ARLINGTON -- The Rangers made multiple roster moves and lineup changes in preparation for Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Angels. The details:

• The Rangers recalled outfielder Scott Heineman from Triple-A Nashville and put him in the lineup at first base on Monday against Angels left-hander Dillon Peters. He went 1-for-6 in the 8-7, 11-inning win, and recorded a double and two RBIs, which are both firsts for him. Heineman just started playing first at Nashville this season. The Rangers can use him at first and the outfield, but they wanted his right-handed bat because the Angels are starting at least three left-handers during the four-game series.

• Right-hander Phillips Valdez was called up from Nashville and pitched a scoreless inning against the Angels. His stint, however, could be just for one day. The Rangers will need that spot for rookie left-hander Brock Burke, who is scheduled to start Game 2 on Tuesday in his Major League debut.

• The Rangers placed pitcher Adrian Sampson on the 10-day injured list with a strained lower back. The injury is not considered serious, but Sampson said he has been feeling it the last few days.

• Right-hander David Carpenter has been designated for assignment. Carpenter, 33, made a nice comeback this year after a three-year absence from the big leagues. He is also 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA and 19 saves at Triple-A Nashville, but the Rangers are looking at younger players in the bullpen.

• The Rangers announced that left-hander Joe Palumbo will pitch Game 1 of Tuesday’s doubleheader.

Danny Santana made his first start at third base on Monday, but exited in the fifth after injuring his left hamstring. Manager Chris Woodward had been eager to see Santana at third base:

“Danny is somebody I want to get out there,” Woodward said. “He has put a ton of work into it, now we get a chance to put him out there. I definitely take in the defensive aspect of it. I would prefer him to get action than not get action. See what it looks like.”

Rangers Cactus League schedule set

The Rangers will open the 2020 Cactus League against the Brewers on Feb. 22 at Surprise Stadium, according to the schedule released by Major League Baseball on Tuesday. Times have not been announced.

The Rangers will play 32 exhibition games, including 30 in Arizona. The final two will be at Globe Life Field on March 23 against the Cardinals and March 24 against a team to be determined.

This will be the 18th season that the Rangers have held Spring Training at the Surprise, Ariz. complex that they share with the Royals. The 132-acre complex serves both teams almost year-round.

The Rangers will play 16 games in Surprise and will be the home team for 15 of those. They will be the visitors for one game with the Royals. That will be their final game on March 21.

All the other 13 Cactus League teams are scheduled to play the Rangers once in Surprise. The Rangers will visit each of those 13 teams once except they have two trips to Scottsdale to play the Giants.

Rangers beat:

• Burke on the possibility of facing Mike Trout in his first Major League game: “Mike Trout is something you talk about in the Minor Leagues and all through your career …'Oh what would you do if you face Mike Trout.' It will be a good competition and definitely a debut to remember.”

• Palumbo comes to the big leagues having been named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for Aug. 12-18. Palumbo is receiving the awarded after throwing six no-hit innings in Nashville’s 4-2 victory over Omaha on Wednesday.

• Veteran right-hander Edinson Volquez has been transferred to Double-A Frisco to continue his medical rehabilitation assignment. He is hoping to make it back to the Rangers this season as a reliever and then retire at the end of the season.
