Red Sox reinstate Sale, Rodriguez from IL

October 31st, 2020

The Red Sox took care of some necessary roster reshuffling with some prominent players on Saturday.

Second baseman Dustin Pedroia and lefty Chris Sale were reinstated from the 60-day injured list.

Outfielder Andrew Benintendi, righty Colten Brewer and lefty Kyle Hart were reinstated from the 45-day injured list.

Lefty Eduardo Rodriguez was reinstated from the injured list.

Teams aren’t permitted to carry players on the injured list during the offseason.

As for Pedroia, he has played a total of just nine games over the last three seasons due to a highly-problematic left knee that has been operated on several times. It seems doubtful Pedroia will play again, and he is entering the final season of his contract.

Sale underwent Tommy John surgery on March 31 and will miss at least the first couple of months of the 2021 season, making it likely he goes back on the 60-day IL prior to the start of next season.

Rodriguez was first placed on the injured list while recovering from COVID-19 and then stayed there for the entire season after he was diagnosed with myocarditis (inflammation of the heart). The Red Sox are hopeful their 19-game winner from 2019 will be healthy for the start of the ’21 season.

Benintendi, who got off to a tough start in 2020 (4-for-39), suffered a strained right rib cage and didn’t play after Aug. 11. He is expected to be fully healthy for the start of Spring Training.

Brewer was a swingman for Boston in 2020, notching a 5.61 ERA in 11 outings before suffering a third right finger sprain that ended his season on Sept. 3.

Hart, a lefty prospect, struggled mightily in four outings, giving up 24 hits and 21 runs in 11 innings. His season was halted on Sept. 1 with a left hip impingement.

With the moves, Boston’s 40-man roster is now at 37.

The club must decide by Sunday whether to pick up lefty Martín Pérez’s $6.25 million option for next season. Pérez made 12 starts, going 3-5 with a 4.50 ERA.
