Tigers not yet engaged in serious trade talks involving Skubal
The trade market for Skubal was expected to heat up after the Tigers squandered a 7-0 lead against the Orioles on Wednesday and lost for the fourth time in five games. Detroit’s decision to scratch fellow trade candidate Casey Mize from Friday’s start to protect his trade value was widely viewed as a signal that the club plans to sell.
The Tigers, though, don't appear to be in a hurry to trade their ace. Multiple executives from rival teams interested in trading for Skubal told USA Today's Bob Nightengale that, as of Saturday morning, the Tigers had yet to seriously engage in trade talks involving the lefty.
The Athletic (subscription required) reported something similar on Friday afternoon after talking with two people from teams interested in acquiring Skubal, nothing that the Tigers are leaving open the possibility of holding onto him.
There do at least appear to be some trade talks taking place, as MLB Network insider Jon Paul Morosi reports that the Tigers have had preliminary discussions of prospect names with other teams to determine which clubs -- if any -- will meet the high threshold to acquire Skubal.
The Tigers’ 13-1 win over the A’s on Friday night trimmed their AL Wild Card deficit to 3 1/2 games, so they aren’t completely out of the playoff race yet.
