CHICAGO – Chicago White Sox Charities (CWSC) is honoring Hall of Fame infielder and designated hitter Jim Thome’s 500th career home run with a limited-edition bobblehead. The exclusive collectible item benefits CWSC and is available for purchase now at whitesox.com/thome, while supplies last.
Commemorating Thome's historic 500th career home run on September 16, 2007, the bobblehead captures the five-time All-Star's celebration after a game-ending blast to lift the White Sox to a 9-7 walk-off victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Rounding the bases with his right arm raised, Thome is shown in White Sox pinstripes with his signature eye black in one of the franchise’s most iconic moments. He was the first player in Major League Baseball history to reach the 500 milestone on a walk-off home run and the first to hit his 500th career homer in a White Sox uniform. A three-digit dial built into the base of the bobblehead also allows fans to count up to 500, a nod to the crowd's famous countdown before Thome was carried off the field by his teammates in celebration.
The bobblehead is available for $40, with all net proceeds benefiting CWSC and Assistance League Chicagoland West at Thome’s request. The nonprofit provides community education and self-reliance programming throughout DuPage and western Cook counties. Each purchase also includes a limited-edition numbered certificate of authenticity.
“Jim hit so many memorable home runs throughout his tenure with the White Sox, but what has always stood out just as much is the impact he has made away from the field,” said Christine O’Reilly, executive director of CWSC. “As a Roberto Clemente Award recipient who has dedicated himself to giving back to his community, Jim embodies the best of baseball. Throughout an illustrious 22-year career from 1991-2012, Thome batted .276 (2,328-8,422) with 451 doubles, 612 home runs and 1,699 RBI, spending four seasons with the White Sox (2006-09). He is one of seven players in major-league history to record 500 homers, 1,500 RBI, 1,500 runs scored and 1,500 walks, alongside Barry Bonds, Mickey Mantle, Mel Ott, Babe Ruth, Mike Schmidt and Ted Williams. Thome hit 30 or more home runs 12 times (nine consecutive seasons from 1996-2004) and 40-plus on six occasions (four straight from 2001-04), receiving MVP consideration nine times and a Silver Slugger Award in 1996. He was a 2018 first-ballot Hall of Fame selection, joining Frank Thomas in 2014 as the only former Sox players enshrined in their first year of eligibility.
For the last decade, CWSC has held a bobblehead fundraising campaign. Given past demand for these collectibles, fans are encouraged to act fast to secure their bobblehead. A limited amount of bobbleheads also will be available for purchase at the ballpark’s Charities Corner in Section 154.
